RE: Walk or Play Date for Los Angeles Dogs?
Hi Laura
My B mix would probably have a great time with your B's, if you want to get together sometime. His most favorite thing to do is to run around a yard with other dogs and play. Let me know if you ever want to meet up

RE: Peeing in the house…help!
I have a Basenji mix, and I had a heck of a time house training him. I've never had problems house training any other dog, and it took a long time before he got it. I would say don't be discouraged and have lots of patience, give her treats after she pees outside and do it right away after she pees and like other people said, limit her access to the carpeted area with baby gates. My dog took stubborn to a whole new level. I'm careful to watch for any signs that he needs to go (lots of sniffing) and he learned to stand by the back door so I know right away. She'll catch on with lots of praise and positive reinforcement. Just hang in there! And also, Bissel makes a carpet spray called "Ewww" (literally haha- I got it at Petsmart) and it's great to take out urine stains out of carpets, in the mean time.

RE: Walk or Play Date for Los Angeles Dogs?
Thanks for the info, BellaJane. I'm going to try to go next Saturday. I just looked up the group on facebook and I'm going to request to join it. I only have a B mix, but he acts and thinks he is a full B. So whoever runs the group- please accept my friend request!

RE: Hi from Los Angeles, CA
I haven't heard of them, but there are so many rescues. I'm always amazed when I meet more rescue people just in LA- there are just so many. The pitties need good people on their side. As for my Basenji- my friend knows I rescue and has brought me dogs over the years from her neighborhood. Her neighborhood is pretty unsafe, and there is a lot of backyard breeding and dumping going on there. My B had been wandering the neighborhood in the same area for a few days and my friend found him and gave me a call after asking around to see if anyone owned the dog. I searched for his owners, with no luck. Since he stuck around the same area for a few days, he would've been easy to find if an owner was looking. He was most likely dumped or just got out of the yard, and no one looked for him. I could tell by his behavior that he'd most likely lived in a yard, and never in a house. He was 8 months old when I got him. Originally I was going to just foster him and find him a new home, but I fell in love.

RE: Hi from Los Angeles, CA
Thanks! Yes, Luke actually likes to wear a jacket or two haha. He gets cold easily. And my pittie is the sweetest. They do get a bad rap- I love when people who think they are just scary dogs meet my pit, and realize how loving and loyal they are if raised with lots of love. My pit and B are such an odd couple, but it's true brotherly love!

RE: Hi from Los Angeles, CA
Thanks! I've actually had him since June of '09, so he's been with me for a while. He's just so much fun. I also have a senior brindle pit mix, and work rescuing dogs, so I have an occasional foster. My B and pittie are very close and my B just adores him and they're always snuggling. They are my baby boys
Okay I'm going to attempt to attach photos to this post- but please forgive me if they come out large or not right. I'm not great with this kind of stuff

Hi from Los Angeles, CA
Hi, I already posted once a few days ago but only joined the forum recently and wanted to introduce myself. I have a Basenji mix (half Chihuahua, half B- I know you guys mostly have purebreds), but he thinks of himself as a full Basenji and his name is Luke. A friend found him wandering the streets in a bad part of town as a puppy. He was such a handful at first, but once I figured out that he is half B, his behavior fit. While he is wild, he is also such a sweet boy and he is a mama's boy. He's turning 3 in October, and has been taking agility lessons for over a year and now competes in an agility league. I'm so happy I found this forum and I love reading all the great B stories! Also, we'd love to meet up with anyone living in the Los Angeles area for play dates.

RE: Travelling with a dog?
I'm new to this board, but thought I would add to this thread. I have a B mix, and he is 17 pounds. He has been on 4 flights with me- 2 round trips from CA to FL. Some were direct, some we had layovers.
I never once had a problem with the airline. I was freaking out, too, about how to find a carrier that fit the requirements. I ended up getting one that was a little bigger at Petco. My dog would have been so squished if I had gotten one that fit the exact measurements.
And you do have to take them out of the carrier to go through security, but as long as you don't carry a lot of other stuff too, it should be manageable. I actually just kept my dog out of the carrier, in my arms, until we had to board for the flight. And no one said anything. And his vet prescribed a little sedative, so he slept the whole flight.
As for layovers, and poo and pee- when we had a layover, I took him into the handicap bathroom and put a wee wee pad down on the floor so he could go. I also put a wee wee pad in the carrier, in case he had to go during the flight. It was actually much easier than I had anticipated. I have friends who have brought dogs on flights too, and no of us had an issues with the airlines being strict about kennel sizes etc. I've flown Delta, Virgin America, and Southwest with my dog. I hope this helps! Sorry it's such a long post.Edited to add: Here is the carrier my dog uses:

While I'm not a fan of Cesar, his line of carriers were the perfect size. Not too much over the size the airlines require, yet more room and they are durable.
