    @Basenjimamma:

Welcome Paivi and Rairai..nice to have you on here.
I knew when I saw your name that it had to be finnish, had some friends growing up with that name..I am from Sweden, living in Texas and I have one B named Otis..:)

Yes, Basenjimamma, P?ivi is a very typical Finnish name. Nice that you recognized! How old is your B?

Welcome from Luxembourg! What a lovely puppy! My B is almost 14 years old.

    Thank you for your suggestions!

I am afraid Rairai would not tolerate a nebulizer, she is not the most cooperative dog I have met. But you never know before you try.

Rairai already suffered from the cough before she started this medication for heart problems. So probably they are not the cause.

I'll meet a homeopath next week, she lives in Germany and works as specialist on homeopathic treatment of animals. I hope she can help.

Kananga, thanks a lot for this advice! This sounds perfect and absolutely worth trying. I'll find out tomorrow where to get this product.

I am a new member in this forum, coming from Finland and living in Luxembourg (Europe) since 15 years.

My basenji is called Rairai, she will be 14 in November this year. I had a male whippet, too, but he passed away 4,5 months ago. He was almost 15 years old. It was difficult for all of us, after having lived together for 13 years. But it was especially difficult for Rairai who had always stayed together with her best friend.

I maintain a blog in which Rairai tells about the everyday life of an aged basenji: http://www.rairai.name

Of course the site is in Finnish, but there are some photos about Rairai and her friends.

Thank you so much for your answers!

We live in the countryside in a low energy house equipped with air filters. Air in house should be clean and "better quality", but maybe this filter system does not suit her? However, perhaps changing her mattresses and blankets more frequently could help.

Happy birthday to Topper, we wish he will stay happy and in a good shape for a long time!

Our basenji Rairai started with heart problems and her cough was supposed to be due to enlarged heart. We started all these different medications (one of them is diuretic) and they helped for a while. But then she started coughing again, and this time the diagnosis was chronic bronchitis. The heart problem should be under control now.

I was thinking about some products that could help her breathe more easily, but I have not found any. The vets here seem to "know" only cortisone… I would like to find a softer and more natural medication.

Thank you for sharing your ideas with us, knowing that we are not alone with this problem helps already a lot.

Thank you very much for all your kind answers.

Our basenji is almost 14 years old and we have her since 1996. She had never been alone before because our two dogs passed all the time together, they were inseparable!

Luckily my partner works at home, so we do not have to leave her alone for a long time. But even if she stays alone for less than an hour, it is too much for her.

Our backyard is not fenced, and our basenji does not like to stay outside for a long time. She loves warm places and often sleeps under the blanket. As to an inside pen, I think it would be a piece of cake for our dog, she would be perfectly able to destroy it in a few minutes…

We have tried to leave radio on when we are away, but as she is almost 14, she does not hear very much any more. We have not tried TV yet, it could be worth trying.

We have been thinking about another dog, but for the time being it is not an option. In fact, we would like to have a "dogless period" after this dog. We both leave far from our home countries and would like to be more free to travel back home.

Please don't give up, we need some more ideas... :)

We all know basenjis hate staying alone, but our situation is becoming quite difficult…

Some months ago our basenji lost her best friend, a whippet we had had for 13 years. Since then she has problems with staying alone at home. When alone, she cries a lot, runs around, destroys plants, doors, walls and so on. She is really anxious and can't calm down. We always have to have someone at home with her, and it is almost impossible to arrange.

We are looking for suggestions or concrete advice. Thank you in advance for sharing your experiences.

  • Chronic bronchitis etc.

We have an almost 14 years old female basenji. She suffers from cardiac insufficiency and takes several medicines: Fortekor 5, Prilactone 40 and Dimazon 40.

She started coughing 2-3 years ago. Some months ago the veterinary told us she has a chronic bronchitis. For some months now she has taken Moderin (cortisone) according to the frequency of her cough attacks. If she coughs less, I give medicine 2 times per week, if she coughs more, I give medicine every day.

Unfortunately her cough is getting worse despite the medicine, and I am afraid it is not a good idea to continue giving cortisone for a long time.

Any similar experiences, ideas, advice? Thank you in advance.
