RE: Using a harness for walks (Gentle Leader)
I bought a Med at Petsmart and had to adjust it quite a bit. There is a silver small ring that should sit right about the top of the legs on the brest bone. It's lasted 10 years. I've noticed that as she gets older her trachia muscles have gotten weaker. My vet suggested that I put this harness on again to help. So I'm using again on walks.

I used a brand made by holt. It's a bit tricky to fit but it adjusted well as she grew. My breeder suggested it. However, the leash clips to the outside part of the upper neck

Can you suggest a good vet in the area. What about a good boarding facility

RE: Greetings and Salutations from Virginia
I am new to Virginia, but not B's. My 11 yr old girl is the love of my life. In training I used lots of tools trying to out smart her. The funniest one was the singing bass. She would go potty in my all white dining room. No matter how I tried I couldn't stop her. I was a stay at home Mom too. I finally set up a singing bass on the floor. I set it on motion detection. When she would go there it would start singing a startle her….She could not figure it out. She quit doing it immediatly and also alerted me...I still laugh to this good day! I also put her leash on my belt for at least 30 minutes a day. She would go where I went. So now no matter where I go in the house, there she is. Each month I was fortunate to go to new Basenji puppy parties. There she could run with about 20+ B puppy's. Even a small dog park would have worked. I took her everywhere with me. I took food from her. So she would know I was the pack leader. I ate first. I would move her when sleeping and gently put her back. I just can't say enough about pack rules. I know other dog owners thought I was nuts. 11 years later I still am having to remind her daily who the real boss is. She is very well behaved and NEVER off her leash. I learned early on, no matter what. She will take off like a rocket if something gets her attention. One time it was a blowing leaf. That inclination will always be a part of the breed. I recommend crate training. I didn't let her sleep with me for quite some time. I learned that short consistant commands are clearer. A shaker can made of aluminum with pennies in it was better than my voice. They will use a short sided box with cedar shavings in it instead of the inside floor. when little. Mine loves raw veggies in the afternoon, Once older. I have used dry food for a long time. She rolls over, shakes, down stay, stand, off, in your chair (for car rides). All for the love of a treat. She enjoyed lure coursing. She enjoyed being shown. She loves my best friends yorkies but no other small dogs. You'll have so much fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What great companions they make......Yea! and Good Luck from one who is still trying to outsmart her!

RE: Pedipaws - What's your opinion?
I use one all the time. Kali doesn't mind it. I wish I had used it the whole 11 years. I also have found that a horse grooming stone called a thinner is GREAT for shedding. It looks like a lava rock and smells like an egg…Yuck I know. It's the best tool I've ever used on my B. My breeder first used it when she was in the ring. Once learned it's the greatest as well.....I'm new here but have lots of experience with this breed.....

RE: Basenjis and Rain
I recently spent 6 months in Florida with my 11 year old B. She hates the rain, but it just makes her go outside and do her business faster. I also have to coax her to go outside. I walk her in the rain though. It takes her a bit to accept that we are going on a walk. She looks at me like I'm crazy. Non the less we go outside. I did notice that she gained weight through the rainy season because of the dislike, so I watched her feedings more closly. Then comes the dry season and she's fine. Even in the pouring rain she walks around puddles. She will stand at the waters edge but not go in. I have seen them in the keys up to their tummies though. I guess it depends on the B.

RE: Is a Basenji Right for Me?
I am new to the forum but not B's. I've lived in Colorado, Oklahoma, and Florida. I agree about cold winters. My 11 yr old B loves the fire or the warm sunshine. She's only vocal when startled by a stranger or I try very hard to get her to yodel. Mostly I never here anything but snorring!! I've stayed at home all of her life. I wanted a B most of my life, I knew however that by working full time I couldn't devote the time needed for good puppy training. I do believe that early socializing helped both of us alot. I've taken her everywhere with me all these years. I had a very young cat when she entered my home. It took a great deal of time with her to teach her not to chase the cat. 11 years later she is still jealous but loves the cat. She generally does not like small dogs. She thinks they are prey. Your home is fine. I too believe she would accept other animals. I just don't think the time sounds right somehow. Something I can't really put into words. I once got another B to enjoy. He let me know early on that my home was not right for him. He displyed his unhappiness early on. He is now very happy in his new home. It was very evident on his initial visit to the new home. Even though I would like another one at this time. I know it's best for me to wait. For all it's worth. It takes a lot of devotion in training, and socializing. If you really want one, I suggest a rescue that maybe came from an enviroment like yours or one that another person recommends would be good with you. Your research will go very far. I agree with everything else written to you as well….Good luck in your research.

New to site
Just saying hi to great Basenji people. I'm not sure about all our personalities but we all must have a bit in common. Laughing at my 11 year old brindle girl is one of my favorite things to do…She's out of Colorado but currently lives in Virginia with me....Awesome Dog! Very well trained and is not too aloof. One word commands worked best for me
