Thanks for all the suggestions everyone! I went out and got him some herring and sweet potato food instead of the lamb and rice, and the girl that helped me is actually a vet tech (or she's studying to be one… I can't remember). Either way, she had lots of good info for me too, so between all of these suggestions and hers, hopefully Rami will be feeling better soon! We've actually gotten quite a few barroos from him, and he's been much more playful the past couple of days, and he didn't do either of those even before all of this, so hopefully that means he's doing better!

Ug, years?? Was there any one thing that you found that got rid of it, or did it just run it's course and finally go away on its own? I gave Rami some 'good bacteria' as the vet called it (started with an L, can't remember the exact name, but it was a long one…) while he was on his meds, but I quit giving it to him. Should I keep that up?

We had him on chicken and rice when we first got him, and then realized he was allergic to chicken (his coat was always so flaky, and as soon as we made the switch, it went away). Do you know about sweet potato and herring? I've read that sometimes that's even better for sensitive stomachs…

My basenji, Rami, has been having some stomach issues for the past few weeks. The first time we took him to the vet because of a severe bout of diarrhea. The vet found 2 types of bacteria in his system, and from what the vet has said, they are normally found in dogs (known as bad bacteria), but Rami had way more of it than he was supposed to. So that led to 10 days of 2 different meds, one antibiotic powder and the other was Metrozinadole. A week after going off the meds, the issues came back. I took him back to the vet, and he still had the high clostridium count (guess the other one was fine). The vet gave us 2 more weeks of the Metrozinadole, and since his poo still wasn't better when he was supposed to go off of it, we got another 2 weeks worth (he was on it for a total of 4 weeks which I would hope should have done the trick!). His poo just hasn't been back to normal, and I'm afraid the problem is going to come back. He hasn't gotten in to anything (i.e. eating something in the yard) because I make sure to watch his every move when he goes out now, just in case, and he is on California Natural Lamb & Rice, so I know he's eating a quality food that is supposed to be good for sensitive stomachs if that's the problem. Has anyone else had this problem with their dogs?

Rami did that when we first got him and we thought it was nerves. It continued after a few months, so we changed his food (same brand) from chicken to lamb. He had been eating chicken all his life and somehow had recently developed an allergy to it. He still has flaky skin every now and then, esp this past spring when everything started blooming (he's a sensitive guy ), but for the most part it's much better. I also give him fish oil pills, one with each meal. I would try a better brand of food and maybe stick with chicken, but if that still doesn't help, try beef or lamb instead.

Both my B and a relatives B get "zit-like" bumps called pustules. They can be filled with a cottage cheese type consistency, or a very watery liquid. The vet has said they are perfectly harmless. If your B seems to be bothered by it and you can't seem to 'pop' it or drain it, you can take them to the vet and they can drain it for you. The last one Rami had was pretty hard and it took some squeezing to finally get it to 'pop'. Ug, sorry for the gross description! I know when I have a question though, I like to get whatever information I can! Hope that helps

Rami is currently on Iverheart to prevent heartworm, and I noticed it has given him an upset stomach He is his normal happy self, just has some diarrhea. The vet suggested to try giving it to him with food next time, and that I can give him some Imodium, which is for humans for diarrhea. Has anyone ever tried using it for their B before, or had any experience with Iverheart?

Thanks everyone for all the help. It sounds like he's just running on empty in the mornings, so I'll try a couple of the suggestions. I'm also taking him to the vet in a couple months for his yearly checkup, and maybe I'll have the vet check on his tummy too! He seems to eat grass a little too often as well (which makes him throw up the same stuff.. sigh) If only they could talk and tell you what's wrong!

So, Rami has been throwing up it seems every Saturday morning, or every other Saturday morning. Originally I had decided it was because he was being sneaky and eating dirt in the backyard (why he liked it, I have no idea :rolleyes: ). Anyway, it stopped for a couple weeks once I decided to be the dirt patrol and watch him every time he went out. Now it's started back up again, and no dirt is involved! During the week, he eats at 5pm in the evenings and then about 6:30am when we get up for work. On the weekends, we sleep in some and usually gets his breakfast a couple of hours later. I thought maybe he's getting too hungry in the mornings, and so he's throwing up the yellow acidy stuff, but I made sure and gave him a little extra food at dinner, and then two milk bone treats throughout the evening. Maybe I need to start feeding him a small bowl of rice before bed, or maybe the problem is something else? Any suggestions!!?? At least last night I was smart enough to put a blanket down so I didn't have to clean the carpet this morning :o)

Where do they sell hats or ear socks?? What a good idea I'm already planning on getting him a jacket or fleece of some sort - Colorado weather can be a bit chilly!

I was told that because basenji's have pointed ears that cannot be put down (i.e. the inside of their ears is unprotected), cold weather and wind can cause ear infections. Now that winter is right around the corner, I was wondering what the best option is for exercising my basenji is. Is there something I can get to protect his ears while walking him?

Thanks for all the help :o) I did notice that my B was even more itchy than usual the day his paw seemed to bother him more than normal, so maybe it is allergies. I gave him a benadryl, which seemed to help. Next time I take him in for a check up, I'll have to check with the vet…

My B seems to be very bothered by his front paw. He tends to gnaw on it every now and then (the same one all the time), and it does seem more irritated after walks… It doesn't look any different that the rest of his paws, so I'm having a hard time telling if it's bothered by something. Tonight he chewed his nail so low on that paw it bled a little. Does anyone else have a B with this problem, or do you know the cause?? Maybe he has a sensitive paw, and there's something I can do to help the problem..?
