My two year old male had horrible stomach issues and all the blood work was negative. He ended up having an alergy to the food we were feeding him. About 3 - 6 months after changing his food, he would start the episodes all over… Like his system would get use to the food and start rejecting it or something... For the past year now we have had him on California Natural's Salmon and Sweet Potato dry kibble and can food mixed with a 1/4 teaspoon of " Probotics" ( sold at the holistic store too) and have never had another episode. No bile throw up, no kennel messes and regular stools.
--- just saying, might be a food alergy ??

How do I help Separation Anxiety??
Hi All! Everyone was so helpful when D.C. was sick with his food alergies… I figured someone might also be helpful with Lexi's separation anxiety.
It seems to be getting worse! They have both been kennel trained since day one, and she will lay in her bed with her toys even when we are home and the kennel doors are open. She was kind of bad before when we went to work. She would eat bits of her blanket and it ended up looking like swiss cheese after a while.
Since I have quit my job about six months ago to stay home and run my business they are out of their kennels all day. When we go out for dinner or shopping or something, she now eats her bedding... I have sewn up her bed so many times, i finally took it away from her. Putting down only a small towel. Which she ate. Now she gets nothing but the plastic try in the bottom of the crate. I feel horrible as her brother next to her is on a nice comfy bed, but I'm so afraid she is going to get a blockage of this stuff, and those beds are not cheap!
Anyone out there with similar problems?? She's a very sensitive little girl, almost two years old. Any and all comments greatly appreciated !!
Thanks!!
Jennifer
PS, D.C. is doing absolutely fabulous!! -

Your post made me laugh DebraDownSouth.. DC sleeps like this all the time. I can't see how it's comfortable, but he'll stay that way for quite a while… Crazy dogs!

D.C. has gained weight!!!
I'm not sure if this picture thing has worked, but D.C. looks great and I can't thank all of you that helped us through this enough! Thanks everyone for your stories and fabulous input. Seems he has a food alergy and so we've put him on " California Natural" wet and dry. Salmon and Sweet Potato. With a 1/4 tsp of powdered probotics a day. Seems to have worked. NO issues, and he's gained weight and energy … Same ol' D.C. dog again!

RE: 2 year old male dropping weight fast…
Good morning! NKJVCJS I'm not certain on what he checked for, the paperwork just said complete blood work with a $119.00 price tag next to it. I do know that a fecal float was done as well. - Buddy's Pal… Thank you for your post, When we first got DC, the breeder had him on Iams puppy.. We kept feeding him that and he got really sick after about 9 mos later, they said it was bacteria overgrowth. so we changed his food to nutro lamb/rice/ and oatmeal. seemed to do great, changed to the same brand only in adult after he was a year or so, then got our second B, we had to go back to puppy. now this past month he's dropping weight so fast.. so we changed his food again- this time from the holistic pet store. 12.00 for a 5lbs bag plus the supplement powder.. . he does seem better, but i like your idea of mixing in some beef or chicken. i would love to see him up to 22lbs, he was around 24-25 a couple of months ago and looked great. i keep telling my husband to stop complaining about the price of the food because the vet bills will be more ! and besides, we don't have a college fund to put aside for them, as these are our babies, so make sure they have the best while we have them.

RE: 2 year old male dropping weight fast…
Thanks for asking Nicole; He's getting better I think. The blood test results were all "normal" The vet said it was a food alergy. He had a bacteria overgrowth last march that landed him in the Vet ER, we changed his food and never had another problem until recently when he started dropping weight so fast. so we've put him on "california natural" herring and sweet pototo with some plant enzymes & probiotics powder. we'll see how this works for him… Thanks again for checking on him... through out it all, he's such a little sweetie...

RE: 2 year old male dropping weight fast…
he was a hungry boy when he got home as he didn't eat breakfast before his 7am trip to the vet. i've mixed some chicken/rice and pumpkin in with some kibble as a treat for him to say i'm sorry for leaving him there and putting him through that! He's still not coming near me… lol.. i'm glad it seems to be just his diet, that's an easy fix.
I can't tell you all thank you enough. this forum has certainly given me great ideas and knowing that you all have tried them and they're true, and to have real feed back from experienced situations, there is no greater voice than someone that has already lived it, done that and got through it... so thanks to everybody again!! -

RE: 2 year old male dropping weight fast…
" probiotic and prebiotic powders available at petstores. " is this something I would put in his food on a regular basis or just to treat what he has now?

RE: 2 year old male dropping weight fast…
LOL I can see how a Beagle would teach a Basenji to bark… lol...
Well I just heard from my husband after picking DC up from the Vet's. Apparently all the blood tests results won't be back until tomorrow. Vet said he checks out fine though... He gave him " Metronidaz 06" tablets 250mg. Not sure why or what it's for, so i'm not going to give him meds until i get the results back!! Does anyone know what kind of drug that is? All I could get out of my husband was something to do with an upset tummy.... $200.00 later to find out we should probably just change his food. I will get the fixin's to make the satin balls... sound like those should pork him up a bit and we'll go visit the holistic pet store this weekend for some new food.. It's a good $200.00 well spent to know it's nothing serious... ( well hoping the blood test results say so,..) Thanks to everyone for your support and helpful feedback!! What a load off of my mind !!! I'll send updated pics as we fatten the boy up! Thanks again!Jennifer

RE: 2 year old male dropping weight fast…
Thanks Dan! I ordered a kit last night online… and asked the vet to do a urine test for sugar as suggested. And thanks for the feedback Ivoss.. you know, he does eat well and yes he poops bigger than Lexi.. We get maybe two hours between walks lol... He goes about three times a day I would say. First thing in the morning, after work, and then again for the second evening walk. Sometimes only two times... usually three. But they eat on and off again. They eat when they're hungry and never finish a whole meal. Will go play and come back to it and nibble until gone. The more I read, the more I think he just needs a change in diet to get more out of his food. I always called him my ADD boy.. he's so hyper! lol...

RE: 2 year old male dropping weight fast…
I just tried to look up his sire and dam and guess what? Nothing… no suprise! Guess that means no Fanconi test prior to breeding them. Thanks for the tip though Pat!

RE: 2 year old male dropping weight fast…
he really is skinny and he dropped it fast. I dropped him off this morning with a list of what everyone said on here and asked the vet to run whatever test he needed to do because I didn't want to have to bring him back. He was so upset just getting him there and then he tried to get out of the door when we put him on the scale. He weighed in at 20.4 lbs I had to laugh though because the vet office has a cat as a " Mascot" and DC is never around cats. The vet tech let go of the lead and he was gone after that cat..LOL. and the look on his face was like, " What? What'd I do??" lol… I will let you know as soon as I hear. Doc had to fit him in between surgeries today so could be afternoon until i hear anything... i'm on pins and needles waiting! Thanks for the support ya'll!

RE: Hello from Canada
Welcome Bernice and Cory! I too am new to the forum and I can't tell you enough how great the instant and helpful feedback is. Everyone on here shares and knows the same love I have for my dogs so the understanding level is amazing. Yes the breed is rare lol, I have only found two breeders in FL. I'm originally from Muskoka and I would imagine these short haired dogs are going to have quite a wardrobe for the winter weather you get. Which is why I moved to FL. LOL.. Although this year, both of my B's got sweaters!! We got our first B 2 years ago after some research much like yours. Everything you read tells about the great traits… but man did we get schooled and FAST! LOL I have never known the love from a dog so strong as I do wth this Basenji. Someone told me once that when a Basenji gives you love and attention it's because he wants it and no other reason. So I feel very special and loved when my dogs are so excited to see me when I get home and never leave my side. Where ever I am in the house, they have a bed because they have to be where I am. We loved our first one so much we decided to get him a sister. Best move we ever made... Two is so much more fun!!! The B-500 ( which you will get to know...) is extremely entertaining!! Now that D.C. is 2 and Lexi girl is a year, we're thinking of getting a third. As for training... treats, treats, treats!!! and a water gun! lol I only have to reach for the water gun and move it and they stop whatever bad thing they were getting into... watch your socks, sofa pillows, and be prepared for the great dig to china on a nightly basis before curling in a tight ball to sleep! and enjoy! Just keep reminding yourself when you are getting frustrated... "that's just a basenji". My brother came to spend the winter with us, and he can't get over the fact that my dog stands on his hind legs to watch me do dishes, or cook something on stove or just stand next to me. He doesn't think a dog should have his feet on the counter. Well I just replied that I was glad DC didn't jump up on my counter and walk around on it because he sure could if he choose too...that's just a basenji... lol..
