We live in Florida and we are on the water alot. We use the Ruff wear life jacket . We have had others but did not love one until we purchased this one. My basenji loves the boat and the Ocean but will not get in the swimming pool.

RE: Sunscreen
Thanks Debra for all the information I had researched Sunscreen a few years back because we spend a lot of time on our boat and it was so confusing. I would decide I would just order the doggie sunscreen and read the ingredients and they had a bad one listed. So I just started putting rash guards on Kaiah and tried to keep her in the shade when possible (lol). She had a red bump come up on her nose a while back and we thought she had maybe gotten bit by bee so we gave her some benedryl and no problems. The redness is gone but now months later a small bump is still there and it looks a little weird. I am taking her in next week for our vet to look at it . Hence the quest for a good sunscreen. I read in an article that Benzophenone-3, Triethanolamine, Methyl Parabene, Zinc Oxide, DMDM Hydantoin, Imidurea, and PABA Should not be used on dogs. My vet suggested a baby sunscreen and I have found a couple that do not have these ingredients but wanted to see if anyone with a basenji has used them first. Thanks for all the information.

RE: Sunscreen
Thanks I appreciate the recommendation. I have always been concerned about the sun with my basenji because she is mostly black. She really does get extremely hot. But I was hesitant to put sunscreen on her because of the ingredients so I just put a rashguard on her. I will give it a try.

Flea and Tick Treatment
I have a 5 year Basenji and a recent rescue 10 month old Vizsla, hound mix and I needing some advice. My basenji had been on triflexis for a couple of months and had a bad reaction (she was lethrgic) then we were using a topical medication that was not working , My vet gave me a new medicine, nexgard and I came home and researched it and i did not see any bad reviews. They have been on it for maybe 6 months or so . Well I looked it up again and saw some horrible reviews on the product. I discontinued my use. I live on an island in florida with alot of wildlife etc.. Any advice?

RE: Deer antlers
We have been buying them for a year or so and Kaiah loves them. But in the beginning the store owner was telling us about them and how wonderful they were and that she didnt know a dog that could chew through them. So we bought one and she ate the antler so small in 45 minutes that we had to throw it away. Next time we were in the store we told the store owner about it and come to find out the antler that we bought was split so now we are just careful to buy the whole antler and she has 3 or 4 that she works on but it is a slow process.

RE: New food dilemma
I had Kaiah on Orijen puppy and she started having major problems. The vet said it was too high in protein so he but her on a Science Diet (Sensitive Stomach) for a couple of weeks it had horrible ingredients but it did get her back to normal and we switched her food to Fromm Chicken ala veg and a little Surf and Turf and she has been fine since.

RE: Chipley was attacked
Poor Chip!!! That is so scary when they get attacked like that. Please give everyone extra hugs and treats from us. I hate that he was in so much pain. But I bet Nicky and Eddie and his usual Sunday gang will help him and he will be back to his old self in no time. Im glad you are taking him back to the park, it has to be hard on you and him but you do want him to be able to go back I know he loves it. My prayers are with Chipley for a quick recovery!!!! Please keep me posted on how he is doing!

RE: So sweet
Thanks Anne I feel better just knowing about your friends dog, she has been passing some of the items I just hope it all goes through ugh….. I guess I will know if there is a problem if she starts acting sick... I think Nicky just has good taste with the shoes and purses, Kaiah only wants the cheap flip flops. Good advice on the drawers I will be more prepared next time and ask them to put everything in them.
Thanks again!!! -
RE: So sweet
Kaiah is doing great!! We want to come back to Tampa soon and let them all play, she had such a good time with all of you guys. My only issue with Kaiah is her eating things, clothing, rugs etc….My other basenji April was a master at eating my daughter friends clothing and bags she would just watch for them to put it in her reach and she would eat a hole right thru it. I was hoping that Kaiah would not be like that but this weekend she pulled 2 items out of a friends bag on a counter and ate them, I hate that she ate their things but the worst part is her ingesting them it scares me. Any advice?? I could mostly keep all of our family's items picked and put away but vistors are hard. I even give them the talk right when they walk through the door to stay with us. I know you have had alot of experience with your pack and any advice would be helpful.

RE: So sweet
Oh Anne that is so sweet. I think we met you guys when Chipley was only with you for a couple of weeks. We were so surprised that he was a recent addition he looked like he had been with you forever. I am glad he found such a great home with you.
