Anxiety from loneliness…
Hello to all of you wonderful Basenji owners out there!
Okay, it is day 5 of Fred's passing, and Ginger seemed to be taking the past week with just a little bit of moping, and sleeping alot, which she usually did anyway. I now know for sure she is deaf, as she took many cues from him and his movement before that she doesn't respond to now.
I usually only go away to work 4 hours at a time, and she has never hesitated to get in her crate with treat incentives. I never make a big deal about going in or coming home, and I never would rush or create an anxious time of going in, and it was never a problem with the 2 of them, and they would settle down and go to sleep. I leave the hepa filter on for some noise, and all was well.
But now, she's realizing that she is in there alone. And within minutes the crying starts. Oh, a heartwrenching, horrid sound it is, too. And when I get home 4 hours later, it is still going on… along with some destruction. I had a cover of a big towel over the wire crate that hasn't been touched in 10 months (and yes, I know that we could never have towels inside for them to shred), and the ends were somehow pulled inbetween the wires and shredded... she didn't eat them, just pulled them, because I watched her do it - she didn't hear me come in.
So I put fleece over the top next time, and forgot a tshirt on top of that, and somehow, the tshirt got pulled partially between the wires and shredded (a Boycott Petland shirt!). I got her outside where she began to stress-poop everywhere.
The next time, nothing was around but one piece of fleece inside, and it wasn't touched, but she stress-pooped inside the crate, which they have never done in the 10 months I had them.
In between those times, I tried the sedative the vet gave me "just in case" - Acepromazine - and the first time I gave her half at 3pm, and she was knocked out until the next morning, basically - she was so woozy she could barely walk outside to pee.
The next time I gave her 1/4th, and it still seemed to knock her out. (She is also on Tramadol and Benedryl 2 times a day).I took her to my boyfriend's last night (where she has been many many times before, and I have left them with him with minor fuss), and he said she howled the entire time, even though he and his daughter were there.
SO, what do I do next, without drugging her so heavily?
Will this pass, because it just seems to be getting worse, not better? -

RE: Should I be concerned?
You all are so wonderful.
I helped Fred to go meet Jesus today… the vet did an autopsy right after, and he said he had full blown stomach cancer that had spread to the pancreas and liver. So all that I had done was all I could do.I was his mom for 10 months, a BRAT rescue, and he will be missed.

I helped Fred to go meet Jesus today… the vet did an autopsy right after, and he said he had full blown stomach cancer that had spread to the pancreas and liver. So all that I had done was all I could do.I had been writing about some of the trials and meds on the "Basenji Puppy Matters" "Basenji Puppy Feeding" "Should I be concerned?" post. We have been dealing with it since July/August.
I was his mom for 10 months, a BRAT rescue, and he will be missed.
BTW - I did take Ginger, who is always high strung at the vet's office, even after a long walk beforehand. She was pacing the whole time, until the time, and she hung around for a little while, and stopped whining. Then she wanted to leave, and she never looked back, like she usually does, when he is in there getting tested. She didn't let out a peep in the car on the way home, came in, looked around once, and is now sleeping on the couch.

RE: Question regarding stomach issues
I had a Golden that had a fetish for paper items in the trash and socks…
and were at the vet for blockages 3 times with her - all socks. This dog would eat any food you gave her, and so the biggest sign was not only when she would refuse food, but when she would drink tons of water and then throw up the water. When that happened, she was too dehydrated to pass the sock, and I took her to the vet to be put on IV, and fortunately, she passed the sock each time once she got hydrated.
ALl that to say you must get the xray/ultrasond for a blockage.
"Female" items would be a different story, so I would go get her checked as soon as you can.
Female items are made to absorb liquid, which is NOT good in a stomach or intestines.Hydrogen peroxide was a life saver a few times with her, when I caught her having just eaten a leather jazz shoe, or a padded bra, or... ballet tights... (After a couple of hours, using it would be too late...)

RE: Should I be concerned?
thanks, everyone…
no, he is worse, and it hase been gradual, but I just can't get him to eat anything any more. Much has happened since the last post, but last Saturday took him in when he refused to eat again, and the vet noticed his gums were white (why didn't I notice???), and did a blood test again, and said his anemia levels were very low.
Imuran/Azathioprine, but nothing has changed in a week.Have tried to feed him everything - baby food, vienna sausages, hot dogs, every kind of sandwich meat available, ground hamburger, ground turkey, canned chicken, chicken noodle soup... the only thing I haven't tried is Spam. Eats it once, then won't eat it again.
I think I am going to have to help him cross the bridge. I hate that I can't do any more for him.

Mate viewing crossing the bridge…
Hello -
I have a bonded pair of basenjis, both 14 years old.
One, Fred, we believe has cancer, and has deteriated rapidly.Ginger has not been separated from Fred (as far as we know), and has separation anxiety when he is taken into another room at the vet.
I was planning on taking her with us to the vet so she could be there when he passes, and was wondering if anyone else has experienced this? Since they feed off of each other's energy, will she understand it better if she is there when he passes?

RE: Should I be concerned?
Hi there -
well, a visit to the vet again last Wednesday brought it down to either cancer or severe stomach ulcer, without doing a biopsy and all the extra expensive stuff…
so we stopped the Reglan (it wasn't working) and went back to Cerenia and Carafate, and eating only chicken and oatmeal, and he hasn't thrown up since! He had lost 6 pounds, and in a few days, gained one back. He still doesn't have much energy.
So, I don't know if this is a temporary fix, but it's working so far! -
RE: Should I be concerned?
OMG… just read something else...
do you think Frontline Plus could cause some of these symptoms? -
RE: Should I be concerned?
Thank you all for the great information!
I still didn't get the exact numbers from the vet, but he said that the blood results ruled out all of the problesm that bloodwork shows, and she he is trying to treat it as IBS, with prednisone and at first had given me Cerenia for vomiting, but now has given me Reglan. (He is 14 yers, and I rescued him for BRAT as an owner surrender at the shelter.)(He has never been a pickey eater until the last month.)From reading the above post, I think I was messing up his taste for foods, possibly, because he would stop eating something, as the first time I gave it to him straight out of the can, and since I thought he liked it, would put Missing Link in it the second time, and then he would reject it. ( I have been giving him Missing Link since January, and it never bothered him before.)
So now I have been trying the food cutlets in the sealed packets starting yesterday, and today is the firsd day he hasn't thrown up yet, an today is the 3rd day on the Reglan, so maybe a combo of the 2?I have also figured out that he doesn't like drinking water from the steel bowls I have, as he will go to my boyfriends and drink alot from the plastic bowl there, and not drink much here… and when I put both down, he would sniff the metal bowl and go to the plastic one to drink. Maybe that's contributing to the food as well?
Lord, who knows...
I'm just happy I didn't have to clean up vomit this morning... -
RE: Should I be concerned?
Thanks! I'll let you know tomorrow…
should there be something specific I should ask him? -
RE: Should I be concerned?
well, I didn't get the numbers, but I know they have the printout, and the vet has a message to call me in the morning.
It's just all so strange, since he ate so well without hesitation for 5-6 months after I rescued him. His girl has always been the picky eater.
I'm a big dog person, myself, having a lab and a golden in the past, who would eat anything on the floor… and they would only refuse food when they were sick.
But I keep reading that pickyness is a trait for Basenjis, but I only feed twice a day, and if they don't eat it, I pick it up, and I did that for a week with him, and he didn't eat for a week. -
RE: Should I be concerned?
Something about liver levels were high, most of the rest were normal, but it caused him to want to do an xray, and that showed that his liver was a bit enlarged, but not a huge concern… there was no blockage or anything else like that.
So he gave pred and some 4 pack of Cerenia to keep from vomiting...
and it was working until he finished the 4-pack...
but I have had him since January (a BRAT rescue) and there weren't any problems until about a month ago, now... -
RE: Should I be concerned?
I switched Dallas over to Wellness last week & he still isn't eating. I called the vet & they said it's because he is getting used to the food but him not really eating has now been going on for over 2 weeks. He will kind of pick at the kibble but then doesn't want it & will leave his crate. If I shut the crate door he will just calm down & wait to be let out. Yesterday he was in his crate for 45 minutes just laying quietly but didn't eat a thing! So I removed the food & tried again later with little sucess. Again he ate less than half of the food…which means about 1/4 a cup if that.
Then this morning he threw up but it wasn't bile it was actually pieces of the kibble...
I just don't know what else to do as far as getting him to eat. I bought the best puppy food there is but he looks at it like it's repulsive or something. I called the vet & he said, try switching to eukanuba puppy...I don't want to have him on that crap food though!!! Help!!!
Hey there - I have just joined this forum, and I am having the same problem with my 14 year old basenji, and after a week of not eating (after eating Wellness for a few months), I took him to the vet, who did blood work and had some concerns, and put him on I/D and steroids… but after a couple of days he didn't like the I/D any more, and I went straight to canned, as that is all he would eat... and then he didn't like that anymore, and I tried the homecooked chicken and rice thing, and didn't want any of it, and just got him the 95% canned chicken, and seemes to eat that... but is still throwing up randomly, and it is just bile and rice (from the I/D)... so I'm going to call and ask about more information on IPSID...?
Anyone else know about this?
