  • Basenji Wanted: Miami, FL

If you will look under this heading at yodeldogs, you will find someone with four red and white pups and two adult basenjis that are available in the Atlanta area. These are beautifull Basenjis. I recently adopted an adult female from her and we are thrilled with her. I know it is a long trip, but believe me, it is worth it.

There is one thing about Jozie that I haven't mentioned. When I first posted this thread, I was cautioned about Basenjis around cats because I have a 17 year old male cat. When Jozie arrived at our home, she immediately began to explore the new surroundings. The cat made an appearance, ignored Jozie and she ignored the cat. The next day Jozie approached Montana, they sniffed each others nos and instantly became friends. There has not been any cat chasing or abuse. The cat comes and goes as he wishes and all is good. Jozie lived with three cats and now readily accepts them in the house. This is a wonderfull match.

Today makes one week since Jozie came to live with us. She is a different Basenji as she has changed a lot. She has also changed Moxie from being a very insecure, lonely Basenji missing his lifetime companion to an alert, more active Basenji who trots around the yard with head held high or running after the teasing squirrels. Both have bonded and are very comfortable with each other. Every day brings more changes. Last night, Jozie joined Moxie and I on the sofa during an entire movie. She now routinely walks up to where I sit and wants to be rubbed. She is like a shadow following us when Donna or I move about the house. She has to know where everyone is and what they are doing at all times. Jozie is a playhead and starts teasing Moxie into play when we first get up in the morning and continues all day. What can I say, she is at home and loves it. Her adjustment has progressed at an amazing rate, beyond my wildest expectations. She is doing things that I did not expect to see for at least one month such as allowing me, a male to hold her when she was not accustomed to men. She is laying on the floor beside my chair as I write this.

Jozie and Moxie are so similar in color and marking that when I simply glance at one of them, I regularly mistake which one it is. I have placed Moxie with Jozies food by mistake on one occasion and have done the same with Jozie on one occasion. Moxie has lived with me for ten years.

We have posted four videos now on youtube for public viewing. Here is a link to those videos

Thanks once again to all of the well wishers out there in Basenji land and many thanks to Robin Dubbert for allowing us to bring this wonderfull girl to share our home. Robin still has some beautifull puppies that need a good forever home as well as a couple on fantastic adult male Basenjis. Anyone wanting a good companion is doing themselves a disservierce by not talking to Robin and going for a look at these Basenjis.

    Basenjimamma,
Robyn has already been told, there is no way Jozie is ever leaving our home. She is officially a part of the family.

And the dance continues in Florida. Donna shot this video and I have just learned how to upload, thanks to Robyn. Jozie is adjusting very well. She is timid about everything. I left her out in th house with Moxie on the porch for about two hours. When I came home she was sitting up on the sofa watching TV. We have tried to get her on the sofa but she has refused until now.

Wow….A 1000 mile plus round trip to the Atlanta area so Moxie could meet Jozie this weekend. A tiring journey in two days. It was worth every inch of it. Jozie's response to Moxie and I went much better than I could dream. It went so well that Jozie rode home with us. She is quite a little thief. She stole my heart before I could think. What a little beauty. Attached are a couple of photos of Jozie and Moxie. The markings and coloring for the two of them is amazingly similar. They make a very fine looking pair. Now the work begins for her acceptance, but it is going much better than I estimated. Jozie wanting to play is photo one and Both watching activities in the second. They are doing well with Jozie in her new home. She is a little timid, learning about the new space and so far has only gone out to explore the yard when she needs relief. I tried to coax her out but she would only peek out the sliding glass door. She also exercised her voice last night because she wanted the night light on. Thanks to all of the well wishers out there and many thanks to Robyn Dubbert. She is a really nice person and is excellant to work with. If any one out there is looking for a Basenji, they should contact Robyn to discuss their needs. She has some very nice adults and four beautiful puppies. I wanted to bring them all home with me. They are good lookers with loads of personality. Rainie is a showoff that will amuse you every second you are there.

I know it will require time for a comfort level to be realized and look forward to it. Robyn has already cautioned me that Jozie has had at least one bad experience with a male human and does not readily accept them. She will eventually come around if not forced to do so and observes attention given to Moxie. As for the sounds eminating from their mouths, I love to hear Basenjis making their varied sounds. Unfortunately, Robyn advised that Jozie is not very vocal. I hope that will change when she gets comfortable in her new home. I am sure Robyn will have loads of advice about Jozie for me to use for helping her adjust to a totally new environment. She will be well worth whatever effort it takes.

Thanks for the input Pat. We are looking forward to meeting Robyn and her Basenjis this week-end at her place. We had a nice long conversation this morning and I believe you are correct about her. Her Basenjis are certainly beautiful. I haven't seen their personality, but from her photos, they are typical Basenjis, little devils one minute and little darlings the next.

Good news…..Robyn and I have had a very nice conversation about Jozie and have come to an agreement to place her in our home. We will take Moxie to visit Jozie this weekend for a meeting and after neutering (both will be neutered, Jozie in the Atlanta and Moxie in Melbourne) and a healing interval, Jozie will move to Florida. Thanks to all for your kind and considerate comments and advice in this matter. Jozie will require a delicate adjustment to her new home and I look forward to working with her and earning her trust.

I am aware of a new posting in California, anew posting in Indiana (Both are very interesting) and older postings in Tennessee, SC, and Illinois, but nothing in Florida or Georgia. Since I would like for my male to meet the female so that I can observe the interaction between the two, many of these states are a little too far for a simple overnight trip from Florida.

Are you aware of any additional female basenjis with BRAT? I was told by BRAT there were others that are not listed on their website when I signed up with them; however, since I signed up, I have not been made aware of any that are not listed. I would appreciate any information available that is not on the BRAT website, including a little info on Basenji Underground and the process for using it.

    Hi Fran and Sharron,
We had a Basenji when we got the cat as a kitten 17 years ago. Since that time the cat has lived with as many as four Basenjis at one time. He hides when more than one is around and plays when only one is with him. We would not allow a new Basenji to be with the cat until we are sure she would be okay and properly introduced.

    Hi DebraDownSouth,
I am registered with BRAT and have visited the Wimauma Basenjis. Attempted to adopt one but a couple of delays due to events there and notification of intestinal problems the day before the adoption forced us to look elsewhere. Thank you for the suggestion.

I am looking for an adult, healthy, sociable female Basenji to share a good forever home with two adult humans, one male Basenji and a 17 year old cat and to fill a large void in all of our lives. We would prefer a neutered three to five year old but would consider any healthy sociable female that is two to eight years old. A key issue is that she be compatible with our male. We are willing to travel with the male so they can meet to check compatibility and a short trial interval is desired by us if agreeable. A sociable rescue, rehome, or retired show Basenji would be desireable. I am willing to work with her to make a smooth, stress free transition to a new home. All leads will be responded to. This thread will be removed or closed when the need is filled.
I m located in Melbourne, Florida.

She does have a micro chip. The dog's name is MOXIE (the same as my male) and the chip ID # is - ID#A039298. I spoke to the center yesterday and they have not been able to contact anyone at the associated telephone number but will continue to try.
