Sorry I had not posted but a lot has happened. Ayo ended up having another surgery. The new stone was pushed back to the bladder and they proceeded to take it out from there but in the middle of the surgery it slipped back into the urethra, so they had to go ahead and do the full scrotal urethrostomy, which is what he should have had in the first place. He was neutered and now the opening is in the best place and is bigger so he should be able to always pass the stones without problem , as do bitches when they have this condition. He was pretty beat up for a few days. I feel terribel for having put him through two surgeries. he is still bleeding a little bit after he urinates. But pther than that he is doing very well. he is back to normal, chasing evrything that moves, messing with my cats, who were happy to be left alone for a few days. So I know he is getting better. Tomorrow he gets the last few stitches removed and ankther blood test .

RE: Bad news for Ayo. Bladder stones in urethra
Ayo was having trouble urinating again last noght, and this morning it got worse , so back we went to the vet where a new x ray revealed another stone , stuck in the urethra. I am very confused becuase, fist of all why does he have one a few days after surgery and why is it stuck, i thoight the purpose of the urethrostomy was ao the stones would not get stuck. They emptied his bladder with a, i dnt know what that is called in english, a thin tube that they insert through the urethra into the bladder. he is now urinating better, but the stone didnt move much. he is not comepletetly blocked. but i am waiting to hear from the doctor, who wasnt there and was unreachable.. To see what we should do next….. Im so frustrated!!!.. Here's a picture of the xray...

RE: Bad news for Ayo. Bladder stones in urethra
Thanks everyone for being concerned and all the info. Apparently diet alterations are not really effective in preventing them and can bring on otherroblems. . So the best option is the urethrostomy…

RE: Bad news for Ayo. Bladder stones in urethra
Ayo had his stitches removed today and we got theresults back from the stones analysis. they are 100% Cystine. So he has Cystinuria. According to everything i have read so far. The only effective thing to do is exactly what was done. It is a genetic condition where the kidneysbdont filter Cystine correvtly and they crystalize. it is almost certain that he will form then again and diet has little effect on their formation. Hopefully the opening he now jas will be enough to let future stones pass without problem. he is dping very well, a little under the effect of the medication but almost back to normal. As for me, i have had no more pain, i am not sure if the stone has dissolved or is still in my bladder where it was last seen :-). .. I hate feeling like I could be in pain again at any moment. I think I will call the doctor to get another x ray…

His testicles are still swollen. he is taking 50 mg Carprobay, and 250 mg Clavobay, daily. Tomorrow the vet will check again, and remove the stitches…

RE: Bad news for Ayo. Bladder stones in urethra
Ayo is back home from the vet. He is doing ok, I guess, except he has some incontinence and I know he is hurting abit because he is not very active, as he usually is. Im sure it is normal since he is recovering. i will ask the doctor about the incontinence.

RE: Bad news for Ayo. Bladder stones in urethra
the veteronarian explained that there is little risk of infection because there is still a good distance between the opining and the baldder, even more than in a female dog, which , like in humans, tend to g more infections due to larger opening. …..I have my doctors appointment at 2:30.... And Ayo maybe coming home tonight or tomorrow...

RE: Bad news for Ayo. Bladder stones in urethra
Thanks a los for everyone a thoughts. I just came back from seeing him and he is doing much better today. Unfortunately I had to go to the emergency room last night again in terrible pain. We all drink bottled water in DR because tap water isn't potable. Most people give their dogs tap water but I give them the same that I drink. I still don't know what the stones are. As soon as I know I will let everyone know, and I guess I
L know how to deal with it. As for me I have to go to the urologist tomorrow morning , to get an ultrasound and see what's up…. -

RE: Bad news for Ayo. Bladder stones in urethra
It mentions in this site that urethrostomy cannot be done without neutering. But Ayos urethrostomy was done without neutering. He has an opening between his testicles and penis, near his testicles. This was described as a prepubic urethrostomy and is maybe not as a effective as the full one where they neuter but was also an option..

RE: Bad news for Ayo. Bladder stones in urethra
Yes ..the idea is to leave it open ,because the urethra is small and even smaller now with all the damage..

RE: Bad news for Ayo. Bladder stones in urethra
Thank you Arlene,….yes.. i this case the idea is the whole will stay open so he can always eject them thru there.I dan never heard of that. The other option was a that they would castrate him and make the whole bigger, like a vagina and he would pee thriugh there. HOnestky I had a few moments to make a decisin and in that sitiation I chose to have the prepubic urethrostomy done instead, where they dont castrtae and the opening is a little smaller between his penus and testicles.. In retrospect, i think maybe I should of chosen the other solution... I feel terrible.. I did hav the stones tested and will find out what they are, but the doctors seem to believe that it is very very likely that he would keep producing the stones..That some dogs , like people, just do that , and so the urethrostomy is the thing to do..I just feel a little like I should have had the other one done...... I am waiting to go see him today.. hopefully he can come home with me today........

Bad news for Ayo. Bladder stones in urethra
I was in New York, this past week and while I was away.. Ayo was taken to the emergency room because he couldnt pee and was in a lot of pain. He had six bladder stones.. 4 of which had moved into the urethra.. one of which was really big and stuck. As I flew back home to santo domingo he was given a pre-pubic urethrostomy.he is now recovering and hopefully will be back from hospital tomorrow… i had never heard of that prcedure and frankly it seems very strange to me.. HAs anyone else had any experience with this type of thing?..

RE: Oh me oh my, she's gotten aggressive
I have a different experiencing with kneeling down. Ayo does this a lot when another dog approaches but it has never been followed by aggression, when he does this I consider it a playful act and usually play folllows.. When he is aggressive he usually reacts much more offensively, approaching the dog directly and then it escalates.. Spmetimes other dog owners get scared when he does this , getting low to the ground, because he waits for the other dog to be near and then jumps at him, like an attack, but , with Ayo it is always play , has never been violent.
