    Hi everyone,

I guess with things being so busy and so much going on in my life, I just don't get online as often as I'd like, however, I love visiting this forum when I have the chance. I love the pictures and can't get enough of basenjis in general. I just wanted to wish everyone a Happy New Year from me and my Ella. Hope you all have a great year!

I did hear back from BRAT. They knew of 3 out of the 4 basenjis. 3 have been contacted and the one they didn't know about was going to be contacted today. Hopefully there will be a good outcome for all.

You know, I hadn't thought to contact BRAT, however, I will do that and forward the links to them.

I know, that's why I thought I would post them here. I feel so badly for those poor dogs.

Out of curiosity, I searched basenjis on Craigslist and was amazed at what I found and sadly, some of their owners are selling these dogs and appear to have little knowledge about them. Here are some of the links. One I believe says a basenji/terrier mix, but it appears to be purebred basenji to me.

I put a picture of my little Ella under forum section, Show Off your dog. Still not sure how to properly post pictures, but there is a thumbnail image there.

  • My new puppy is home!

My husband and I drove through a New York snowstorm into Massachusetts yesterday to meet and pick up our new little girl. Andrew, her breeder, already named her, Ella Minnow Pea or Ella for short. All the puppies were adorable, but I was just so thrilled to finally see Ella in person. We got to play with the puppies and meet mom and dad, Raven and Obo, both wonderful basenjis. After spending some time with Andrew, the pups and their parents, we carried Ella out to the truck and headed home. At first she was a bit dazed by everything going by as she watched out the window, then tried to investigate the cab of the truck (no, she wasn't in her crate, but Andrew agreed that she might be more comforted if I were to hold her going home), but after about 15 minutes, she settled down and fell asleep. She slept on and off all the way home, waking only to look around and get comfortable again. Once home, she met her new brother Koda, a chihuahua mix and he was a bit miffed since he was used to being king of the house and getting all the attention. He basically chose to ignore her, although she at times would get right in his face and he will growl or snap at her, which doesn't phase her in the least. Ella likes to follow him around, but Koda is really good at the ignoring game. I'm hoping he warms up to her. Last night was noisy to say the least. She screamed and cried terribly in her crate and I admit, I felt so guilty. She finally fell asleep and woke up at 6 a.m. Today was a much better day for her. I was afraid she might really miss her litter mates, but she's been very happy, playing and taking naps. I'm expecting that she will do a lot of screaming and crying again tonight, but hopefully she'll learn to accept it in time. She's just such a cutie and we just love her. I'm going to try to attach a picture of my little Ella, now 9 weeks old.

Sorry, I was rushing before and didn't give the name of the breeder, but yes, it is Andrew Sawler. I'll meet him tomorrow, but from talking to him on the phone and emails, he sounds like a very nice person.

So very cool that Renaultf1, you apparently have my pups grandmother, because Raven is the mom and Obo is the dad. My pup was named by Andrew and even though he said I could change it, I actually like her name and it seems very appropriate for me, since I'm a kindergarten teacher. Her name is Ellaminnowpea, Ella for short. In kindergarten, the kids like to say LMNOP as if it were one word. I think Ella is a pretty name, so that's what I will call her. I am so excited. I can't wait. I will post more pictures when she is finally home. I've been doing a lot of shopping, including online getting her some things. I just want to hold and cuddle her. I probably won't get a lot of sleep tonight!

I can post a picture, but I can't figure out how. Can someone explain how and I'll try to post it.

Oops, well I did something right and there is a thumbnail image of her.

As of right now, I will be picking up my little girl on Friday. She is from a breeder who has been breeding and showing for 19 years. I am so looking forward to seeing her. In the meantime I've been shopping for a new crate, chew bones, etc. I am so excited.

Thank you everyone for your encouraging words and suggestions. I did try Hounds of Timar and although Jean said they have puppies, they many not be available for sale and won't know for at least a few more weeks. I have another prospect that I'm waiting to hear on, a little girl red and white and I just hope and pray it all works out and I can get her. I'm just waiting for the owner to get back to me. It would mean so much to me if I can get this little girl.

Thank you everyone for your kind welcome, encouraging words and suggestions. I was able to speak to a breeder today and she did have puppies, but a bit out of my price range. I am willing to look outside of NY, and it seems like I will have to as there doesn't seem to be any other alternative if I do want a basenji. Lisa, I am glad you mentioned the Rip Van Wrinkle Basenji Club, because I had come across it at one time and totally forgot. I'll check out their website. I do not live far from Albany. I look at the pictures of all your basenji's and they are just too cute for words. I hope I am lucky enough to find one that is meant to be mine. Thank you all so much!

    Hello,
My name is Donna and I just joined the group. I hope it's acceptable to be a member, even though I don't own a basenji. I can tell you though, that I am definitely a wannabe owner. I've been interested in owning a basenji (or is it being owned by a basenji :)) since at least 1994. Things just didn't work out and I was married with 2 children and going to college at the time, so it just didn't happen. I actually became interested in basenjis after seeing a picture of a puppy on a dog magazine. I swear, it was love at first sight and I immediately began reading everything I could get my hands on, visited dog shows to see basenji's and talk to the owners and trainers and also visited a breeder a couple times, although I don't think they have their kennel anymore.

I currently have a soon to be 7 year old spoiled rotten chihuahua/dachshund mix. He's a very smart little daddy's boy, so attached to my husband and he was supposed to be my dog, but turned out he just loves my husband more. :o

Well, now I feel is the time for a basenji to join our family. I so want a basenji puppy and would love a red and white female. There are very few breeders in New York, only 2 that I know of and I'm not sure that puppies are available, but I'm currently trying to contact the breeders along with a few in Canada that may likely have puppies at the end of the year. If I have to wait, I'm sure it will be worth it, but I am very much looking forward to making a basenji part of my family. I just wanted to say hi and hope to one day be a member here with a basenji. You seem like a wonderful group of people.
