Michigan State diagnosed it as mild Inflammatory Bowels Disease. Which my vet says is inherent in certain breeds and Basenjis
have there own type, which is IPSID so basically the same thing but in a Basenji form I guess. Obviously it is inherent as this other
dog from my breeder has it to. Unless it is a coincidence. Which I could buy if he hadn't lied about the fact none of his other puppies
from any other litter has come down with it except Kobi, which he knows is not true since this other girl called him about her Basenji
before I di with the same situation.

RE: Oakley-emergency surgery
does anyone have a basenji that plucks fur out of another dog. kobi does this to my eskie. than she throws up
hairballs because she eats it. its gross. don't know how to get her to stop. we are having him shaved down so
she cant do it and he will also be more comfortable in this heat. -
RE: Thinking of adding a third basenji
I have a Basenji an American Eskimo and a Whippet. The Eskimo was7 when we got the Basenji, than she was 1 yr old when
we added the Whippet. The Basenji and Whippet are both females which I was told to add a boy if I could instead of a female.
Well the Whippet litter was all girls so I had no choice, as this was a free replacement puppy for a Whippet I lost2 years before
and I was tired of waiting as the breeders wait list was so long. The Basenji and the Eskimo accepted the puppy immediately.
But surprisingly the Whippet is very domineering, so the Whippet and Basenji girls quarrel. They will argue over anything.
But they love each other, cuddle and kiss all the time. But when they fight they fight. No one has drawn blood and I do not
let them go at it if they are getting too angry. I separate them and get them doing something else and they are fine again. Definitely would not feed the 2 females together that is the biggest cause of their fighting so they eat apart. Sometimes toys get them going they want the same toy. So it gets put up if they get carried away. We have not had anybody get hurt and they even go in the crate on their own together and cuddle if they are sleepy. I would never leave them in a kennel or crate together unattended though. So it can work but can be work, but whos to say you get a male and it doesn't happen also. So that's my experience. I know I would not do 3 females together. Also the girls do not hold grudges so that shows me they love each other, and are more quarreling than being mean. -
RE: 2 1/2 yr old male "mongo"
I have a Basenji with IBD, I have her on Hills Z-D prescription hypoallergenic, but I am considering trying raw diet.
I am doing my homework now, and joined a raw diet support group on facebook. -
RE: Kobi1
Update on Kobi. She is doing great om her hypoallergenic diet. Vet has weaned her off steroids and weaning her down to the lowest dose of Flagyl she can handle. 3 weeks and going strong. Has gained back her lost pound and a half. Bouncy happy and no vomiting. Keep fingers
crossed. Again she tested very mild IBD so we are hoping she can live a long and healthy life on the diet and minimal meds. Thanks for
everyones support. -
RE: Simple question about playing bitten each other
When I got my first Basenji Kobi, so I am no expert. But I have a big kennel in the basement that we kept our Whippets in. My breeder strongly advised a crate instead. He said Basenjis are not your normal dog. First she would probably climb out and second if the Basenji and the Whippet
have a disagreement and you are not home one or both could get hurt. I crate them both next to each other. They play-argue a lot but never
bite each other just scream loudly. Even the Whippet barks and is loud. Kobi screams. I still dont let them go to long as I do not want rough play
to turn into an arguement. I would never trust them alone. It only takes one toy or one wanting to be dominant to start an argument. I would never leave them alone in the kennel either. I crate them in a very large great dane size crate with a nice big bed in it and they love their crate. Sometimes they go in there when we are home to take a nap even when they dont have to. -
RE: Kobi1
Well update on Kobi. Good news it is not IPSID confirmed with the vet. And actually Michigan State termed her as mild IBD.
However she was doing good on prescription food for a week and than started throwing up last night. So she is now on meds
and prescription food unfortunately. Flagyl and Predinisone. They are going to wean the Pred and see if she can just maintain
on Flagyl. We are all hoping she can. Predinosone is horrible. I had a Whippet who had to be on it most of his life until the
Pred put him into kidney failure at 9 years old. Keep fingers crossed. She is the only Basenji they have at my vet and you would
think she was a movie star the way they treat her. lol She eats it up. Even gave up a few kisses to them last night. -
RE: Kobi1
Thanks. She is our first Basenji and she has been a joy, even with all this.

RE: Kobi1
Well bad news Kobi does have inflammatory bowel disease. However we are catching it early, she is responding good to her hypoallegenic food. In great spirits and we ard going to do diet first to see if we can avoid steroids. Vet says to expect good quality of life for her and it is very controllable. We are just happy she is going to be okay and whatever happens down the road, we are going to continue to shower her with
lots of love and even knowing that she has this, I still am happy we got her and would not have given up hving her for the world. Breeder is
no longer going to breed dad and mom is retired from breeding. No other calls have come in with any of mom and dad's other litters. Mom
and dad have never shown any health issues. My vet says it can justbe a freak thing. Alot of different breeds besides the Basenji get this.
Just a few are Boxers, Shephards etc. And he says he can have 50 Boxers s an example and 1 might get it. It is an allergy based disease that effects the
internal organs unfortunately. But thanks for all the good thoughts. Happy to be able to talk to Basenji people about it. -
RE: Do basenjis hate kisses
Kobi loves to kiss and get kisses. She would kiss us all day too if we let her. If my husband is laying in bed she pins him down and kisses him to death It is hysterical she literally wraps her arms around his neck or puts her paws on both shoulders and pins him. If he tries to get up she pushes him back down, and continues to drown him with kisses. She is such a fun little girl.

RE: Kobi1
Thanks everyone. Yes I know without even getting results she will be on a special diet probably forever. She
has been eating all day today, so the medicine is working and I gotta think it is this stomch disease vs the
iontestinal one. Either one I feel bad for her. But it is what it is, we will make sure she gets the best of care.
She is our baby, and she is being so sweet through this while ordeal. It is funny our young Whippet puppy
seems to know she is sick and is being so quiet and careful around her. Animals are amazing with each
other. -
RE: Oakley-emergency surgery
I just went through a similar situation with my Kobi Saturday. She didnt eat anything we know of but has a stomach issue which
could have been caused by who knows what. Biopsies sent in. Sleepless weekend. And she too cracked the vets office up eating through
her iv cords etc. -
RE: Kobi1
Deb that specialist you referred would only talk to another dr. He said to have my dr. call him if they have any
questions. So if they cant get a conclusion on this they will give him a call. But sounds like we may have found
the problem hopefully. With 5 biopsies I should think we will get an answer. -
RE: Kobi1
Update on Kobi. She underwent surgery Saturday night. Having 5 biospies of intestine and stomach sent to Michigan
State Veterinary University today. ISPID is being checked however it look more like Duodonums disease. Her Duodonum
is quite thickened and is not emptying out her stomach which is why she is regurgirating her food immedietely after
swallowing. Where with ISPID it sits in the intestine and usually does not come up right away but later after going through
the Duodonum. Her food is not making it through even into the intestines. She is on a medication to break down and
empty her stomach and antibiotics to reduce the inflammation in the Duodonum. She is now keeping down all her food
for 2 days now. It will take a week to get the final diagnosis back. Will let everyone know how she is doing. -
RE: 10y/o with a sensitive stomach
Yes my breeder knows and has never had any problems with his dogs showing any signs of this. The mother of Kobi
has already been retired from breeding as she was 7 when she had Kobis litter and he does not breed them after
age 7. He contacted her litter mates and had kept one of her sisters and non are showing any of the signs. And in
all honesty the vet has not done the biopsy yet, we are trying the protocal diet first to see if that will work because
if it is conclusive she has it we have to do the diet anyway and he is trying not to over stress her with surgery if he
can control the problem with diet. If we cant than steroids have to be given and than he said he must do the biopsy
first. She ate good all day yesterday and today and kept it down. Boiled chicken and rice. Than we will try later to
transition to royal canin prescription intestional care brand. Keeping my fingers crossed. -
RE: 10y/o with a sensitive stomach
My vet said it is not strictly genetic. And neither of her siblings or parents have it. And the only way to test it is if you take a sample of the intestine after they show signs. So I dont understand how you can breed away from it without testing the intestine in all your breeding stock before you breed. I guess I am confused

RE: 10y/o with a sensitive stomach
My Basenji was diagnosed with IPSID it is an intestional disease that is prevelant in Basenjis. They have to do a biopsy of
the intestine. My girl has to be on a special diet Royal Canin makes it for gastrointestinal Issues. It is a very serios
disease and can take over their body quickely. She couldnt eat without vomiting and lost weight, and that how we found
out about it I had no idea they listed this disease as a disease seen in Basenjis. Diarrhea is another sign of it. Hers is in
the upper part of the intestine so thats why she vomits. When it affects the lower intestine they get diarrhea. My girl
is only 18 months old. It shows up in young to middle aged dogs usually. It is called Immuneproliferative Enteropothy.
or IPSID is another name for it, but in Basenjis they add the enteropothy word at the end. -
Kobi1
Hi my 18 month old Basenji girl, Kobi, has been diagnosed with malabsortion or immunoproliferative enteropothy. I guess it is prevelant in several breeds and Basenjis are one of them unfortunately. Does anyone have a Basenji with this intestinal problem? The vet is got her on a special
diet which seems to be working. I just didn't know if this could shorten her lifespan. Hopefully we can control it with diet and dont have to
resort to steroids because I know from experience those will shorten her life. Very sad. Kobi is the Basenji that everyone commented on
because she kisses like no one has ever heard of before. lol She will pin us down and kiss on us forever if we let her. Very open with her
emotions and affection. She is my first Basenji and I have never had a dog like her before. I wish I had gotten a Basenji years ago instead
of listening to non Basenji people who warned me off of them. Glad I did my own research and talked to 6 breeders because I couldnt
get the yearning out of me that kept drawing me back to wanting to get one of these awesome dogs. So I took the leap struggled through
the new Basenji owner struggles asked tons of questions got great advice from her breeder and tons of other breeders and have never
looked back, and have never lost my heart to a dog as I have with her. So any advice and maybe good experiences from owners that have
struggled with this disease would be welcome. Thanks
