Ok, thank you so much! He seem to be ok holding it for 5 hours but I just felt awful to keep him crated for such a long time…I take him with me to work everyday so he is never really alone, except in the evenings if I go out. I will make sure to wear him out before we go rafting!!!

Puppy crated for 5 hours?21 Apr 2008, 03:00Hello,
I am going rafting next Sunday morning by the Sequoia Park. The rafting takes place from 9h00 until 13h30, and our Basenji puppy (4 months and a half) will have to be crated at the hotel while we're gone : ( We will leave Saturday morning and spend the whole week-end there, coming back Sunday night or Monday afternoon so the only time our pup will be alone will be when we are rafting.
I was planning on walking him in the early morning so he sleeps when we are away. He is crate-trained and doesn't mind staying in it, but the thing is: I have never left him for such a long time in it….except at night of course.
What do you experienced people think? Should I not go rafting and stay with my pup? Or you think it should be okay for him to stay crated 4hours and a half?
The other solution is to leave him with my friend in town but it would have been so fun to go hiking with him...
Let me know, I need advice...

Does yours do it too?29 Mar 2008, 00:30My Basenji, 16 weeks, just looooves stuffed animals, especially big ones AND sticking his nose in it and extract all the stuffing inside. He seem to really enjoy this part a lot. I was wondering, since they are hunters, maybe that what they would do in Africa: hunt a pray (bigger than them usually) and once they open their bellies, grab the stuff from the inside of the animal… I know that sounds disgusting but I think I saw some documentary on the animals in Africa and I saw them having the same behavior...anybody noticed that with their Basenji too?

Bonjour!17 Mar 2008, 22:00I got him from a Denise Searcy, a breeder in Nuveo, California. His parents have been tested for the Fanconi disease and he's good. The only little problem is his knee cap that's a bit moving. The breeder discounted him for this reason ($400) and said he should be ok as he grow up - she has 3 other dogs with the same knee cap thing…
Do you know this breeder?

Bonjour!17 Mar 2008, 20:11Hello,
I just got my first Basenji!!! He is 13 weeks old, so adorable and his name is Chai. I have been reading EVERYTHING on this forum and it helped greatly! I have been crate training him with success, and I am going to puppy school. So far, so good: all these horror stories about destructive dogs scared me a bit but Chai is pretty nice, doesn't growl, doesn't pee or poop inside and hasn't destroyed anything!!!
