we tried a steroid doseage for 2 plus years and did not offer enough relief to continue on that therapy.

our female had red inflamed gums and tongue also,,,,we found out that she is allergic to the plaque on her teeth, we had teeth removed and it stopped all her problems..she is happy and eats wet food with no problem, think it was harder on us than her. we exhausted all options including 3 dental cleanings a year and brushing every day.. this was not an easy decision that we made in conjunction with 2 vets. I only wish I had done it earlier.

he is almost 12

We hanve had 4 basenjis. We have always paid great attention to their dental care - we brush daily and make sure they get dental cleanings regularly. Our current dog, JJ, has had to have about 20 teeth removed in the last three years. He only has 16 left. Our vet thinks the rest will eventually have to be removed as well. She thinks his problems are genetic - he had very unstable roots and unbelievable decay no matter what we did. Just wondering if anyone else has had this problem. Thanks.

I am afraid to even mention anything about my two basenjis….. I don't won't to get dragged through the mud if I don't meet someones expectations...
Let's try to lighten up and tr to give more pleasant advice....

we had a female basenji who had seizures also..however she was diabetic and had to be on insulin for 6 years…...we installed sheet covers...bought at target that kept the mattress from getting wet from accidents...we also had a male who developed seizure late in life. due to cancer issues....we kept him off any "mind altering" drugs....hehad seizures but we felt the odds of having seizures was better than a drugged up basenji....make sure your vet give you all the options....

we had basenji who had seizures…if they sleep in the bed with you it might be worth buying a waterproof mattress pad. they can be bought at target or sears, and give yiy a peace of mind if the seizures happen when they are asleep

we had a wonderful vet in Lilburn who has had experience with basenji swho are diabetic….make sure your vet has had diabetic dogs before because you will have to go back often til their insulin level get regular.....its scary for awhile but they can live long happy lives once you get it figured out.....

we have always tried to have 2….and no matter how much they like u,i think they like having their own 'kind' around!!!!

our female basenji loves the snow…wnen we get it.
she runs around until she gets cold,then comes in and gets warm and wants to go back out. the male just looks at her likes she crazy!!!!!

our two basenjis will stop and watch helicopters fly over the house.

our older male has howled in his sleep twice…he is 7 years old...its always a long death howl that scares everyone...he does not wake up...it reminds me of a "i am lost where is everybody, come find me"

2 basenjis who share eating out of two bowls…they have one water bowl by food, one in master bedroom,one outside, all same bowls all have clean daily fresh water....and they only drink out of bowl in master bedroom. they cant wait to get inside and drink from that magic bowl. weird basenjis,just weird

both our basenjis stay out during the day when we are at work…they have a nice dog house and the weather here is not real harsh....has anybody used a dog house heater or something similiar?

we put a water proof mattress pad on our mattress…our former basenji had seizures at night and would soil the bed..this way just wash sheets and dry pad and good to go
