RE: Yeast infections and hot spots
Our girl came to us with a yeast infection. We went through several vet treatments which worked as a temporary fix. We apply Gold Bond Eczema Relief or even a store brand dry skin lotion. We did this every day for several months. Yeast is gone but our girl likes it so comes to hubby, lays on her back by his feet and waves her paws at him until he lotions her.

RE: Pee squatting
Our boy stretched to pee except on walks he would lift his leg. He was with us 16 years.

RE: Pulse Therapy for Dental Problems-Any thoughts on this?
I will let you know how this goes. Dandy has no serious problems with his mouth or teeth. Nothing loose or needing extractions. He eats very well and with all that considered a dental cleaning with anesthesia is not necessary at this time. The therapy will hopefully keep his mouth in tact for the remainder of his days. That is our objective and this is a desision we feel comfortable with.
Thank you all for your interest and well wishes. -
RE: Pulse Therapy for Dental Problems-Any thoughts on this?
Thank you for all your thoughts. At Dandy's age and somewhat frail condition our Vet thinks the risk of cleaning would outweigh the benefit. I trust his judgement and frankly am not sure our boy will be with us much longer. As long as we can keep him comfortable we are good and don't need to add any stressful procedures. Thank you again, senior dogs are certainly an adventure and challenge.

Pulse Therapy for Dental Problems-Any thoughts on this?
Our Basenji boy, Dandy, is 15 and a half and cannot have his teeth cleaned by the Vet any more. Our Vet is recommending pulse therapy which is a program on which you give Clindomyscin 75 mg. twice a day for the first 7 days of each month. We just came off a two week round of antibiotics for a urinary tract infection and it helped his breath while on the antiobiotic. We are going to start this program the 1st of February. Has anyone else heard of this or better yet done or is doing it. I will report our results. I sure hope it works as the capsules cost over a dollar each. I am glad it is only one week out of the month as it is expensive medicine. At his age we will do everything we can to keep him comfortable because that is what our life is about. He is such a good boy and getting old is not for sissies!

RE: Protective Basenjis?
I recently learned of a Basenji owner passing away in her sleep. Her boy Basenji stayed with her not allowing the police, who were summoned after the lady did not show up for work, to go anywhere near her. A neighbor of the lady saw the commotion at her home and immediately phoned a family friend who came and was able to crate the Basenji. I thought this was an amazing story and tells me Basenjis are protective.

RE: New Basenji Owner
Congrats on your basenji boy, but let me tell you they are like potato chips, "you can't have just one". Good luck with your lure coursing.

RE: Kong Cloud Collar
I have never used a collar with any spay or neuter either but my vet had a bad experience with a patient ripping sutures out and I guess i t was a real mess. The Vet wanted to use an Elizabethian but Gracie is so timid (she was a kennel dog which we acquired 3 weeks ago) I think that collar would send her over the edge. I just hate to ignore the Vet about a collar because God forbid anything happens it would be on me. Thank you so much for your comment lisastewart, I feel the same way.

Kong Cloud Collar
I am considering using this collar after our two year old Basenji, Gracie, is spayed. Has anyone used this instead of the Elizabethian and has it worked for you?

Thunder Shirt
It has been two weeks today since we met Gracie, our unsocialized, two year old red and white Basenji girl. She has not been calm this whole time for more than an hour or so. Today we got our the Thunder Shirt. Gracie was so calm we thought paralysis had set in. We let her wear it for only a little over an hour as the company recommends an hour at a time to get used to it. She was totally relaxed and took a nap without jumping at every sound she heard. We then removed the shirt and she is back to her skittish self. Will do this several times a day so she learns what calm is. She is very sweet, not aggressive at all which is a plus, just so scared of everything. Two years of a kennel life will take time to overcome. Yes, we have been walking two to three times a day and she is great on the leash but again scared of everything. Everything is new to her but plan to work with the shirt several times during the day. Wish us luck.

RE: Spaying
I agree with all of you, I just thought the rules may have changed and I was being over protective. I think I will ask the vet if I can spend the night with Gracie at the facility. LOL I bet that would leave him speechless.

RE: Spaying
OMG that scared me to death. Gracie is definitely an escape artist, removing collars regularly. We are now on our fourth type of collar and hoping we have found it. I would definitely be with her, and she is happy in her kennel so I am sure she would do well at home. Our 15 year old male doesn't bother her at all.

RE: The great adventure of Amazing Gracie as told by Gracie
eeeefarm,
Enjoyed your story, sounds like it worked. Are you still clicking? -
RE: The great adventure of Amazing Gracie as told by Gracie
Thank you eeeefarm and Jennifer for your suggestions. We are not ready yet for the test, still keeping her on the leash at all times.

Spaying
We recently acquired our two and a half year old Basenji, Gracie. We had our Vet appointment last week and scheduled her spaying for the end of August. This Vet who has been our Vet for the past 20 plus years is now keeping surgery animals overnight. We have never had a pet kept overnight for spaying or neutering. The clinic does not staff overnight . They add to the fee an Elizabethian collar. I questioned this new overnight policy and the collar, which we have never used in the past, and was told the surgeon, our Vet, would have to approve allowing Gracie to come home the same day and we would have to sign a release form. There is an emergency Vet clinic associatied with our Vet group in our area if we should end up with an emergency.
Does anyone have any thoughs on this issue? -
RE: The great adventure of Amazing Gracie as told by Gracie
eeeefarm,
Thank you for letting me know it can be done, she has come a long way already. Our 15 year old dog is not a lot of company for her, he has his own schedule which involves a lot of napping. Think I will try that clicker, never used one before, probably don't know what I have been missing. I do know that when I release her it will be intentional and within our 4 foot chain link fenced area. Just hope she can't jump or climb fast.
