    Hello Fellow Basenji Lovers-

I am not really sure where else to post this, but I wanted to get some guidance/advice on the best way to move across the country from New York to Los Angeles with our two basenjis, as well as 2 cats and our 2 year old son. I am weighing between flying versus driving. Its a very long haul, and with 10 hours of driving per day, it will take us 4, maybe 5 days if you add all the stops and breaks. Having all the animals fly on the other hand makes me very nervous, as I have heard all the horror stories. My cats are old (one is 13 and one is 19 yr old), and quite frankly am worried that they may not make it. I am not sure how Benga and Lulu would do, but they are pretty healthy. I just worry about their psyche. Has anyone ever used anything like Pet Airways or Pets Who Fly? Does anyone know of an airline that allows basenjis in the cabin with their owner? everything that I am reading is saying that in order for a pet to fly in the cabin, they have to be small enough to fit under the seat….

Sorry for rambling. I am just trying to figure this out, and these are all the things I have come up with. If anyone has tips, suggestions, advice, I would greatly appreciate it.

    Thank you,

    Jen (Benga & Lulu's mommy)

  • Can Basenjis find water underground?

They certainly are DIVINE! There a couple other things that go along with this…He mentioned how they like to lick the water off his feet when he gets out of the shower, and Lulu does this to me all the time...Another is whenever I walk them, they go crazy lunging towards the fire hydrants, not to pee, but to smell...I always assumed they are doing it to smell other dogs' markings, but maybe the water as well. They don't go crazy like that with other places dogs mark, at least not as fervously...It would be interesting to take them out to the dester and let them look for water, and start digging wherever they start hovering... anyone want to try?

I met a guy today while I was walking my two basenjis, Benga and Lulu, back from the dogrun. We were chatting about the breed, and he was telling me, while Lulu was pawing at the sidewalk, that when they do this, they are smaelling water underground, and that this is something that they can do…to seek out underground water, being a desert dog... Does anyone know if this is true? Are they "Divining Basenjis"?

    Very curious....:D

  • Recommendation of harness

Do you remember the brand? I just went to one of the Doggie designer shops, cos it happened to be right by my vet, which they had their annuals today, and I found some step-in harnesses in which the fabric is a bit softer than the regular ones. The walk back seemed fine, considering it pouring rain (I had to carry Lulu for a bit of it…the lil diva!)...:o They are made by Trish Hampton, so we'll see...

I have 2 basenjis and have these nice leather harnesses for them. We switched from collars, because of their pulling, and these harnesses have worked for a while, but just in the last couple of days, I have noticed that they are getting balding spots from rubbing right behind their shoulders. I'm not sure if they just hit another growth spurt (they are 15 mos and one seems a bit fuller) or the weather warming up and their fur is changing, or a bit of both. I want to switch, but wondering if anyone knows of a good harness to switch to that is a) comfortable for them, and b) will help keep them from pulling so much. We have tried several options going back and forth from collar to harness, and can't see to find one that works well. Does anyone know if there is anything that exists that's got the comfort of a Puppia, and the control of the Easy Walker?

  • Winter Boarding….brrrrrrr!!!! It's cold!!

    Hi there,

I have 2 B's that I am boarding for the first time, in NJ at Sky Run. It came highly recommended to me and my partner, so we took the dogs out for the day and got a tour of the facilities, and even got to see the "bunkhouse" that our dogs will be staying in. It is a heated room, with an outdoor kennel attached. Lulu and Benga loved the place, and got to run for a bit in the free run area.

I guess I am a little bit worried about our dogs and the cold (NJ country mid -late December), and not being able to cuddle with us, the way they usually do (our B's are VERY affectionate!). We plan on bringing their usual things, crates, beds, toys, and even a blanket of ours that have our smells on it, but I guess I am just still a bit worried that they will be cold and/or experience seperation anxiety.

If anyone has any words of encouragement, or can think of anything else that will help the transition, they would be greatly appreciated! :) I guess I'm just a nervous 1st time mom…:o

    Thx

Benga had Giardia for a long time that had to get 4 courses of treatment and the vaccination. Lulu never had a problem with giardia, but the vet gave her treatment anyway for preventative reason. I actually spoke with her today, and she said I could actually try evo canned until he's old enough for the evo dry. She told me that sometimes dogs who have bad giardia cases are much more sensitive to foods like evo which are so rich, and it could be up to a year old before he can adjust. I'm going to give it a shot, but if anyone has more suggestions or advice, I'm all eyes and ears! Thx :~)

We have 2 basenjis and have been trying to transition them to Evo Small bites. Lulu is fine on it, but Benga gets chronic diarrhea if it's not mixed with the Hills perscription w/d. It seems to be the only thing that keeps his poops firm, but we don't want to keep him on it, because of the ingredients. What else can we use to make his transition easier and no messiness?
