  • Pet Insurance

Here's a link to Pet Plan Insurance. I just signed up with them. They seem to have the best coverage available, and I've done lots of research. You aren't going to find any insurance that will cover "pre-existing" conditions, but this one will continue to cover issues that arise after enrolling, for your pet's whole life where most other companies won't. There also isn't any limits per condition or hereditary/congenital exclusions. And they are reasonable.

And unlike all of the other Pet Insurance companies I researched, Pet Plan does not have a benefit pay-out schedule. They simply re-imburse for any/all treatments for any injury or illness.

You can choose $50/$100/$200 deductible with 0% coinsurance. That means 100% coverage after your deductible. And the basic plan, Bronze, pays up to $8,000 in re-imbursements per year!

Thanks to everyone for the great suggestions! I read about the poo in the console too, yucky! There will be 4 of us and the 2 dogs, so hopefully we can keep them out of trouble.

Yeah, Missi and Cooper love car rides. No matter how hyper they are when we start, after about 5 minutes, they fall asleep. I'm hoping that they will sleep for most of this trip too! Wish us luck!

  • Basenji road trip - oh boy.

I have a bowling tournament this weekend in Charlotte North Carolina. I live in northern Ohio. Our tournament team consists of 15 girls. Every year, this tournament is our getaway. Last year we bowled in Reno, and went to Lake Tahoe for a day. It was awesome.

    Ok, so my point-

We decided to take Missi and Cooper (our Bs) with us to Charlotte this year rather than board them or leave them with family/friends. We are staying at a pet friendly hotel and we're taking their ex-pen. Has anyone taken a road trip (approx 8 1/2hrs) with 14 week old B pups before? Anyone want to pass on words of wisdom?

    Thanks in advance! :)

Our Bs so far have been really great with other dogs. They met a big black lab, and they played together really well. They met our friends' 2 HUGE Great Danes, and they were good then too. Also with the neighbor's shepherd mix, and my mom's German Shepherd and Bulldog/Boxer mix. They have yet to meet another B though. We'll see!

I'm having sort of the same problem, except I have two Bs chasing around the one stupid cat. There are 2 other cats in the house, and they do come over the gate into puppy territory, but if needed, they hiss, growl and swat (no claws) and the puppies don't even look twice at them now! But Embers (1 year old cat) enjoys interacting with Missi and Cooper (11 1/2 week old Bs) and when they start to get too rough, the cat just lays down in a submissive positon. Then the pups play tug-of-war with his tail, or rip clumps of fur out, and Embers just meows and sometimes runs away. We mostly have to pick him up and put him out of reach of the pups! He will sometimes jump right back down by the pups again too. I'm very interested in comments/suggestions on this situation.

"Thats great that you too have rescued herps, most people dont give a damn about herps cause most of them arnt cute and cuddly."

I feel the same way. My husband and I did (ex-husband still does, since he's got the animals) many educational programs for the public. We are members of the local herp society and visited schools, nature centers, and anywhere that would have us to share our pets and our knowledge of reptiles. People are so ignorant regarding herps, and have such horrible misconceptions of these creatures. It was very fulfilling to prove them wrong and to actually watch them walk away with respect for those animals (even if just a little bit).

My husband and I raised reptiles and took in many unwanted animals and rescues. At one point, we had:

    1 American Alligator (unwanted)
1 Argentine Black & White Tegu
    1 Columbian Golden Tegu
    1 Savannah Monitor
    1 Nile Monitor
    1 Argus Monitor
    1 Green Iguana
    1 Blue-Tongued Skink
    3 Bearded Dragons
    2 Leopard Geckos
3 Burmese Pythons: 1 albino (unwanted), 1 albino green (unwanted), and 1 regular (rescue)
    1 Reticulated Python
    2 Peruvian Redtail Boas
    1 Columbian Redtail Boa
    1 Argentine Boa
    1 Coastal Carpet Python
    1 Irian Jaya Carpet Python
    2 Western Hognose
    3 Ball Pythons

Talk about a Zoo! Enjoyed every minute of it though. Unfortunately, dear hubby got custody of our herps in the divorce :(

Consider yourself lucky! lol That's as far as Missi has made it. She's only tried to climb one other time after that photo was taken. I hope she loses interest before she figures out how to get any higher! :)

Here is a couple pictures from the night Missi attempted her escape. They seem to be enjoying their pen better than being in the crates. They go right in all as soon as they see us bringing out the Kongs!

Thanks, I really appreciate all the support I've been given from this forum. It's good to know that we're on the right track with the training, and that my pups are behaving normally. I am being very patient and trying to be as consitent as possible with training. I understand that it will take longer to potty train since we aren't home during the day as much as I'd like to be, and that they have the peepads too. They are responding very well to the bits of treats they get when pottying where they are supposed to. I thought maybe that's why smart little Cooper has been peeing so much! Oooh I pee on the pad or outside, I get a treat! Pee pee pee pee :)

And just cuz I love to share my cuties, I've attached a couple more pics.;) Sorry the quality stinks, I can only upload pics from my cell phone for some reason. The ones from the camera are too big.

Nothing yet. They haven't discovered that method of escape yet. We are working on constructing something to cover that open space. The only time they've tried to get out was when they knew we were eating. And even then it was only the female who attempted to climb out. We will be putting something in that gap. Better safe than sorry.

Any thoughts on the pups having unlimited access to water while penned during the day? Reminder: they are 10 and 1/2 weeks old.

LOL the ex-pen is 48". We debated on the 42" but decided the 4' would be better due to basenji climbing antics. And it's a good thing we did because Missi started climbing about 10 minutes after we penned them up while we ate dinner that first evening we had it! She didn't get very far, she couldn't get her front paws to the next set of rungs. We give them Kongs or something good to chew on when we put them in, so hopefully they will understand soon that it's a good thing for them to be in there, and not try to climb out. They seem to like it ok, they go in on their own to potty sometimes or just to play. I think she just wanted out so bad because she knew we were eating. They don't make a peep at night now either. I think they like being able to snuggle up with each other.

    Another question I had:

Cooper seems to pee an awful lot. They do drink constantly, but he goes very often and just little bits at a time. I don't know if he just hasn't learned to hold it yet, or what. He has been using the peepads pretty regularly though, so I can't complain about that. Is his frequent peeing something I should be concerned about?

We bought an excersise pen to allow for more space for Missi and Cooper while we are at work. We attached the open ends to their crates, which we butted up against each other. That way, they can still have their own space if they want it, as well as a common area.

    My question:

What do you guys think of this set up? There are 2 water bottles attached to their crates (one in each). Is it a good idea to allow them constant access to water while we are trying to potty train? We started to use small treats that they love when they potty where they are supposed to. This seems to be sinking in better than praise alone, however, Missi still pees on the floor when she pleases. She'll go the peepads, sniff, then walk to the pen bedding or to the living room floor and squat. I don't get why she starts in the right place and then pees in the wrong place! I could use some suggestions. She poops on the pads though. We try and take them outside frequently, but we've had a front of cold weather and they don't like it out there much. Poor things start shivering almost immediately and then look up at us with those sad eyes…

My last puppy (toy fox terrier) potty-trained almost instantly. It involved very little work. My b's on the other hand, totally different story! lol! Any help is appreciated!!!

  • When should we start puppy kindergarten?
    bethp14B bethp14

Will do! Thank you very much for the guidance. We've taken many of the suggestions we've received in the last few days. Missi and Cooper now have an ex-pen so they aren't cooped up in their crates during the day while we're at work. We've also bought a bag of Solid Gold food to try (we'll mix it with what we've got now as it is used). They love their Kongs, and they are accumulating quite a number of toys to play with, although I think their favorite is still my pantleg :)

  • When should we start puppy kindergarten?
    bethp14B bethp14

Missi and Cooper are 10 weeks old today! Some folks on this forum have suggested socialization for the pups. I was curious as to when and where we should go. Our local PetSmart offers classes. Are these worth while?

  • Cuter!
    bethp14B bethp14

Definitely. They've already met Molly, the neighbor dog. Molly is an Australian shepherd/lab mix I think, and she's a really good dog. She is never on a lead. A couple days ago when we had Missi and Cooper outside to potty, the neighbor unknowingly let Molly out too. She kept her distance at first, and the pups didn't even know she was there. Not knowing how any of them would react, we watched over them like hawks. Slowly, Molly came over to check out the pups. They got along great! Just sniffed each other a lot, no nipping, no growling, no anything! I was very surprised. When is a good age to start puppy kindergarten? Are the classes that PetSmart offer good?
