We got him at 8 weeks old, so he has no trauma causing him to be so fearful at the vet. I can handle him fine at home, using treats If he doesn’t like what I’m doing. He is fine with car rides and loves hiking. It’s when we pull into the parking lot of the Vet, he Completely loses it. He is irrational. Then on the way home, he is quiet and knows he’s going home.
Hi,
Do any of your basenji’s freak out at the vet? My 3 year old basenji, Bailey, gets so freaked out/ out of control that I can’t handle bringing him by myself. I had to wait until 6:30 pm last night when my husband got home to bring him. He has an allergic rash on his belly so I wanted him to be seen. He also has to be muzzled inside the vet because he is so fearful and irrational. Otherwise, he is a happy, mischievous, playful, sweet little guy who loves everyone he sees. If anyone has advice, I’d be happy to hear it.
Thanks so much,
Beth
He does good, but they are puppy proofed completely. Separation anxiety when he’s home alone is his biggest issue right now.
We limit our B to 2 rooms in the house when he’s home alone. We close all the other doors in the house. We “basenji” proof those 2 rooms. We did try to crate train him when he was a puppy. After failed attempts, we came home after a birthday party one night to a crate completely filled with vomit, pee and poop. It had extended well into the kitchen and he was shaking and whimpering when we returned home. We had to put the crate outside to be hosed down. Clean him up. The kitchen required a massive clean up. I had to hold my shaking basenji for an hour to calm him down. I decided that crating him was just not for him, or in his best interest for that matter. Every dog is different.
Hi!
My 2 year old basenji, Bailey, has separation anxiety. He gets very anxious when he’s home alone. The vet suggested getting another dog, but a calmer dog, to keep him company. Does anyone have experience with a companion helping ease separation anxiety.
Thanks!
Hi,
I was wondering if anyone else has had B’s with seizures or symptoms of a seizure with your Basenji. Bailey is 1 and a half, Friday night he started staring at the ceiling, then furiously licking his paws and wiping his face with his paws. He ran around the house in a panic, and then after a little bit he ended up calming down. He was fine all day Saturday and then showed the same symptoms before bedtime. He did the same thing Sunday for a few minutes. He is an anxious dog and has separation anxiety. We took him to the vet and they did blood work and prescribed phenobarbital to try out, an anti seizure medicine. He’s not even 2, so I’m worried.
Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks!
My basenji also has severe separation anxiety. My vet recommended a calming treat with melatonin in it to give to him a half hour before he’s left alone. It’s naturvet “Quiet Moments Calming Aid”. You can get it at petco or any pet store. I also leave out a “security blanket” on the floor where I put all his chew toys. Good luck!
Hi,
I have a very active 1 year old basenji, Bailey. He has a big fenced in yard to run around in, but when I have him out on a leash with a harness, he makes me nervous because he gets SO excited at everything and tries to run. What’s the best harness for a basenji/possible escape artist. I just have a regular harness from petco.
Thanks!
