My name is Dana K and we have to wonderful Basenji's. A red girl named Moto Fopaw's Ayanna Anaya but known to all of us who love her as Blossom, and a tri boy named Trey Nkechi Olujimi, known to all who love him as Trey. We would be lost without them! Blossom is 6 and came to us first from a wonderful breeder. Trey is 5 and was a rescue we received through another wonderful breeder. We had a basenji 42 years ago when we were just young married's and loved him dearly. So all these years later we have them again. I must say it has been much easier this second time when we already knew what to expect from Basenjis. Trey has separation anxiety but is gradually getting better. Blossom just gets her nose out of joint that she is not the one and only Basenji now! (We had a minature dachshund when we got her at about 3 months old I think!) For a while she thought she was a dachshund! We would be lost without our basenji children.

RE: Bullying
We. too, have a Basenji rescue male and a female we have had for six years. We got the male about 2 years ago. It isn't so much that he bullies our female as he just bosses her around. She will be laying on the couch and he will come sit in front of her and stare at her until she snarks at him and gets up and moves, whereupon he takes her place. Any suggestions?

RE: Tony, the rescue
He looks like a love! We have a rescue that when we got him we almost thought maybe we made a mistake because he would growl and bare his teeth if we came near and was very standoffish. However, we just gave him a ton of love and attention and now he is the best, most loving basenji boy you can imagine!

RE: He loves his new crate, even when i go outside ...
Well, my rescue one - the tri boy doesn't like a crate AT ALL. He will do it, but he mopes. My red girl was fine with crates when we got her because the breeder trained her great! However, we have spoiled her rotten and now she hates them and will sulk for days if she had to stay in one.

RE: He loves his new crate, even when i go outside ...
I don't ever crate my two and we are sometimes gone for long periods of time - most of the day. We have even been gone until late in the evening. However, that said, we have a big fenced yard and a doggie door. They come and go as they please. I'm sure if we were in an apartment we might have to crate sometimes. I have found with our two that as they grow older they are more trust worthy around the house.

I have scat mats on the open sides (2) of my open kitchen. They work like a charm. No basenji's in the kitchen.
