RE: Rescues are a great choice!
HI all. I also got my Basenji from a rescue in Southern California. I got him as a puppy and there was 5 in the litter. He is a great dog and we love him dearly. Just keep them busy busy busy. We have 2 rescued dogs one was full grown the other a pup and they are both truly wonderful dogs.

RE: Off the couch game
Wow there is nothing better than having my basenji on the couch with me. I agree tables or counters absolutely not but he has a blanket they he will lay on on the couch if it is not there he wont go up so when there are visitors over the blanket comes off.

RE: Leash training
I have a 5 month old puppy. He has not been to any training yet but I am taking him out on the leash. He is a lunatic! running, sniffing, running around in circles, zig zagging. The only way to keep him next to me is to hold the leash really tight and then he gags but is pulling still. Should I not be even taking him out until he is trained on the leash. Help! I actually think I am teaching him to think that a tight leash is the way it is supposed to be. He is pretty smart and is learning other things so quickly I think it is me who is the dummy!

RE: What to mix with chicken and veggies???
Just make some chicken broth or save broth from beef and pour it over their meal. It is healthy and they love it.

RE: Puppy training tips…
These are great tips. I have an older dog (not a basenji) and that does help to tire the little one out. My puppy is sitting on command but so far that is about it. We are walking him alot and he is very social so far seems to like everyone. I took him to my work where there are lots of kids cause when he gets older I want to take him with me. The puppy is now going outside unattended to go to the bathroom and has not made any mistakes in weeks. I have been working on getting him to sit on the rug so I can take him to work and he will sit quietly while I work. Sometimes I have success and other times its a bust. I am planning on starting some training soon. He is going to be 5 months old mid march. Any recommendations on a good time to start?

RE: Look Who Gave In…and It wasn't the B
Mine sleeps with the other dog in his bed. I am a light sleeper so even my big dog has to go in the laundry room now cause she snores.
BUT on Monday I was in bed sick and my b came up on the bed with me and it felt so good. Now he comes in in the morning for a cuddle and I enjoy it as long as he does not steal my slippers on the way out of the room. -
RE: 1st time dog owner
I just think it is easier for them and it makes them feel secure when you have to take them in the car etc. I had mine in the car in the crate and in trying to get him out and leashed for a walk he got scared and ran back in there. Also I had a workman at my house with all the crawl spaces open, in and out the front door etc and my b found solace in the crate and I felt that he was safe while there were people working. I just wonder if he lays down while I am gone, it seems he is always standing ready to exit when I approach hopefully he is not like that the whole time I am gone!

RE: 1st time dog owner
I crate mine but do leave him confined to the Laundry room with toys food and my big dog if I am going to be gone longer than usual. This weekend someone left the bathroom door ajar and he managed to get in there, shut the door and lock himself in the bathroom!…....with a brand new roll of toilet paper........wow what a disaster when we got back. Luckily no permanent damage but he was so scared he was shaking and so nervous. I think he would rather have been in his crate!

RE: Does your Basenji go umph?
I get a sound that sounds so mournful and just like he is saying ohhhhh nooooo it makes me laugh out loud. I get snoring and a little yodel when he is REALLY happy.
