She is a cutie but not sure about the basenji aspect based on her colouring, ears, tail and coat. I'm seeing some lab in her but as was mentioned a dna test is the best idea. All that said she looks like a real sweetheart and deserves all the belly rubs!!

RE: Help with getting started.
Can I ask what brought you to feel basenji's would be for you? Have you been around them? I certainly love my b's but generally don't recommend them for most people especially if you work long hours. Basenji's are trainable but aren't like golden's who come when called. Basenji's take a message unless there's something in it for them.

RE: Basenji Obsessed with Cleaning Feet?
Basenji's can be obsessive about grooming especially their paws. Gotta keep the white socks clean. As long as they're not causing interdigital irritation or pulling out hair it should be fine.

RE: Help with getting started.
So because you possibly can't get a basenji this year, a year during which you're getting married an already stressful situation, you're looking at potentially having a dog shipped overseas? Are you paying for it have its own seat? Anyone who truly cares about their dog would not ship it in cargo especially overseas. Please do not get a dog this year or until you've settled into your marriage. One major life change at a time!

RE: Is this typical?
My purebred basenji girl loves to cuddle with her head stuffed in my underarm. No worries, they'll surface if they need air.

RE: Picky Basenji
Not a great idea to feed 'people' food. They will come to expect it and won't eat what they're supposed t. As for raw food, please don't. Unless you go to a reputable butcher, not grocery store, you can run into parasitic issues. I work for a vet and our hearts broke when we had to euthanize a 3 yr old who had chronic diarrhoeas due to raw diet. Best to put food down, 10 mins then pick it up. A healthy dog won't starve themselves.

RE: Oldest basenji?
Our B girl Sophie turned 14 in Nov. People always ask if she's a puppy. She still jumps up on the back of the couch to sleep in her favourite spot. No signs of her slowing down!

RE: Intro - basenji in my future?
Hi. Fellow Ontario basenji owner here. Once you get to know basenji's and all their quirks you won't look at other dogs the same way. You are smart to go to some shows to meet with breeders and learn more about the breed. That way you can also find a breeder you're comfortable with. If you have questions you can always reach out to me. Depending where you are we might be able to meet up. Robin

RE: Picky Basenji
@debradownsouth - Just an fyi, the vet did try everything possible with this dog but nothing worked and ultimately it was the owners choice to euthanize not ours. Unfortunately, we are bound by what our clients wishes are and what they can afford.

Mom to 3
Hi,
My name is Robin but post under Marty (our first Basenji). We currently have 3 Basenjis, Darbi, Sophie and Lilia. Darbi and Lily are mom and daughter while Soph is the 'crazy aunt". Sophie doesn't look like a typical Basenji: her tail doesn't curl very much, isn't bushy and her face is half black/half white but we loved her on sight. In March of this year we discovered that Lily has Fanconis so there has been a lot of adjustments made to her life (and ours). I posted in the health section regarding this very picky girl who is refusing her supplements so any help people can offer would be great.
I look forward to hearing and sharing many stories!
Robin
