My rescue Basenji used to have bad separation anxiety (due to being abandoned twice) but I found that getting her a snuggle puppy has helped her greatly. I used to always play music but I never found that it was much help with my Basenji.

I currently leave my basenji in her crate when she is alone (never for longer than 3 hours I am currently in the process of completely dog proofing my room for her to roam free in) she used to scream the whole time she was alone but once I placed the snuggle puppy in her crate she began to feel much more comfortable being alone and now does not even cry when I leave. I am also sure to provide her with something to entertain her while I am gone.

My vet also recommended a pheromone room spray/collar that mimics mother dog smells to help with anxiety. I personally have not used it so I can not speak to its effectivenes.

I recently adopted my Basenji from the pound who had been given up twice prior. Causing her to have separation anxiety and she seems to hate men. Whenever men get too close to her or even just pass her by on a walk she will start growling and barking (thank god she has never tried to bite anyone) I have had her for about two months now and I thought we were making good progress with socialization and we were able to go to the dog park without her barking at any of the other owners ( she has always done better when there are other dogs around and is more relaxed around strangers with dogs present) and even go on walks without her barking at men. However, it seems as if she is going backward and is now beginning to be reactive with all strangers and even with one of my roommates who she previously tolerated well and it seems like all our progress is gone. Does anyone have any tips for me?

Hello! My name is Claudia and I am a law student who recently adopted a Basenji mix (not sure what she is mixed with) whose name is Rotisserie!

Prior to adopting her, I did not know much about Basenjis and just stumbled upon the breed at the local pound. I have owned many dogs in my life so I am an experienced dog owner but my Basenji is one of a kind and after doing loads of research I found this community. I want to be the best dog owner I can be for my pup and I look forward to chatting with other basenji owners and getting some tips on how to be a better owner for my dog!
