Whenever it's time to take Dingo for a walk, and if it's me taking him it means he's going to the park to run run run which he loves of course. My phsycho dog will play this crazy game where he'll run away from me in the house when it's time to put his harness on. It's not like the harness is too tight or hurting him in any way and he knows he's going to go off leash in about 5 minutes once we get to the park. He'll get close to me and and kind of "paw" at me like a cat would do and not until I get very stern with him will he get close enough so I can put the harness on. He even knows that I've got a pocket full of doggy treats but that's not enough to persuade him. This is one ritual that I can do without!

Welcome to the forum from a fellow Michigander, I'm a newbie myself to this forum. Although I live in the metro Detroit area, my mind is usually in the western/northwestern part of our Great ( yet slightly economically depressed) state. I lived in the Leelanau Peninsula (Cedar) for 4 years and it was absolute paradise. I can't hardly take more than about 6 weeks of the concrete jungle without getting the itch to have some "fishing therapy" in n.w. michigan. We've got a 2 1/2 year old Basenji mix (Dingo). Not sure what he's mixed with but he exhibits 99% Basenji behavior. Once again Welcome and enjoy!

We already had 2 cats when we brought Dingo home and the cats immediately tried to show him who's boss. It didn't take long for him to realize that A) he was a dog and he was bigger than they were. My wife layed the dog on his back and held him there in a submissive position and let the animals smell each other. It has worked for the most part because they all seem to coexist quite nicely. However, at least once a day Dingo and one of the cats ( Indy) get into a tussle which they both seem to enjoy and it's 50/50 as to who starts the fight. All the other cat (Kion) has to do is raise her paw and he backs off. Oddly enough though, one minute it sounds like they're tearing each other to pieces and the next minute Dingo will be licking (grooming) her. If I can ever post a video of it I'll do so. It is a sight to behold.

Yeah, I agree that they do get a bad rap. My wife got "charged" by a pit bull that was off leash on our block while she was walking our daughter who was only a year old at the time. She did her best " I'm momma bear and you'd better not mess with me or my daughter" pose and yelled at the dog to stop and go home and oddly enough the dog did just that. Same thing could have happened with any dog I suppose, but it left her with a lasting impression.

It's kind of funny actually, the white patch on his rump almost looks like the Nike swoosh. My wife and I have thought about the Pit Bull part of him but my wife isn't too fond of Pit Bulls so she is in total denial!

Glad I found this site! These are some crazy pooches aren't they? We live in suburban Detroit , Michigan ( no we don't fear for our lives every day) Royal Oak to be exact. The brother of a friend had this pup and didn't feel it was fair to leave it home alone all day while he worked, so he gave it to us. We were'nt looking for a dog at all because my wife and I could never agree on what size of a dog to get. I wanted medium to large and she wanted small.
Dingo is a great compromise because even though he is maybe in the small to medium size range his attitude more than makes up for it. We homeschool our children so he has constant constant companionship all day every day. One odd thing though. His ears don't stand up straight and he can work up a full blown bark if he wants to. We have no way of telling whether he is 100% Basenji or not, but all of the other characteristics are in full force. Of course a DNA test or something of that nature might tell us but for $300.00 bucks or whatever they cost we'll just keep on guessing! Maybe somebody out there in Basenji world could chime in and tell me if they've ever seen a full bred with floppy ears. I've never been known as a "dog person" per se, but then again I sometimes wonder if our Dingo is even a dog. I'm sure some of you feel the same way. Love to hear from somebody to maybe solve our Dingo mystery. Kirk.-
