Import

Hello. I am currently interested in eventually getting and showing a Basenji. I was wondering if it is acceptable to import a Russian born Basenji that is fully registered with RKF/FCI Papers and has a championed pedigree. I found a breeder that I am interested in but was wondering if it is possible to register the dog with AKC to show. I see a lot of posts regarding the African new imports for the foundation stock service and no information about others getting dogs from Europe or Russia. I'm not new to showing with AKC but this breed seems to be clouded in a little bit of mystery haha. Thanks!

You should contact AKC directly with this information and ask if this dog can be AKC registered. That is your best course. Here is a link regarding Foreign Registration. Looks to me like they would be.

Just curious, why import? Many wonderful breeders in the US

You did not list the county you live in.

I would suggest you get your Basenji from Australia or New Zealand.

No fanconi in Oz,but to import into USA, each State has their own vaccination program. Hawaii has no requirement for rabies vaccination, but most States have a requirement which can take about six months to go through. And signed off by a vet pretty well within 24 hours of shipping.

I find nothing saying Australia doesn't have Fanconi. I do find breed clubs saying to test for it.

Um... huh?

Importing INTO Hawaii is very strict. Because it is rabies free, getting a dog there is not easy.

Getting them into OTHER states is, in fact, much easier. You absolutely don't need 6 most to import a dog to most states.

When I shipped to Hawaii from Australia, the dog was picked up, let out of his crate, had a piddle, then flew again to another island, and settled in, with no further inspection for health. We are rabies free, and so is Hawaii, so no problems from here or there. But the Australian export laws expect that the dogs are free of any disease, and only certain vets are certified as being able to sign export certificates.

As for other States in the USA, the big hurdle to cover is rabies. Each State is different, and depending on the destination, will depend on how soon to give the rabies vaccination. The Australian Quarantine Inspection Service (AqIS has changed its name), demands a certain protocol to follow before it will allow an export certificate. The crate is also quite specific that the dog has to be able to stand up without touching any side or roof. This is not an overnight job to get them ready for export from Australia.

I have exported to Hawaii and the 48, so I think my experience is relevant.

Except the person didn't ask about shipping from Australia. So I had no idea you meant only australia to hawaii. That makes sense.

Thank you for the replies everyone! I contacted AKC and figured everything out 🙂

Looks like your connection to Basenji Forums was lost, please wait while we try to reconnect.
