Basenjis: A Complete Pet Owner's Manual by Mary Lou Kenworthy

  • This book was written by Mary Lou Kenworthy. She has been breeding Basenjis for over 35 years and is known for her healthy line. Her kennel is Kenset Basenjis in Georgia.

Her book in my opinion is perfect for puppy buyers and will be a required read before anyone takes home an Annandael Basenji.

It covers health issues, grooming, showing, temperament and it even goes over training the stubborn little guys! It even has a special "Heeling" section.

I recommend this book to anyone who loves our breed or is curious about them.

  • I've heard nothing but good things about this book. Can't wait to get my hands on a copy. I'm going to have check out Amazon and Borders.

  • Just ordered my copy - it should arrive in 10-15 days (here's hoping) or sooner:)

  • yay hope you enjoy! 🙂

  • I just bought this book last weekend and it is great.

My Mom, who is not an animal person at all, was visiting from PA and she read the book while here and really found some interesting things about Zahra. By the end of the weekend I think she would have put Zahra in her bag and taken her home if she could have. Zahra was on her best Basenji behavior and really had my Mom convinced that she is an Angel and her brother, Chase the Puggle is the devil! LOL!

Great book, the pictures are wonderful and I liked how it showed you how to trim nails. I have been nervous about doing this myself but this book showed you how to do it.

  • Great book just read it in under 2 hours. Very easy to read and put a lot of my anxiety to rest. Great stuff on training too, very easy read!!!!!!

  • i liked the book just not the part about basenjis and kids. i really beleive if i basenji is raised with kids then they will love them and be gentle with them. i had them when i was a kid and fender sleeps with holden. otherwise i am in agreement.

  • Just came across this list online.
Hopefully the owner won't mind me posting the link here but if you are looking for Basenji books here is a list of just about every one ever printed! There are soooo many I was really surprised. Of course some may be out of print and others are published within clubs etc so may be hard to find.

  • If anyone is looking to buy a book on Basenji's cheap you should try searching Half.com Under books!! ITS the BEST Prices you'll find!!!!

  • Unfortunately our local bookshop couldn't get the one by MaryLou kenworthy so I have ordered THE COMPLETE BASENJI by Elspet Ford, which is about $45 AUD instead. Hopefully this one will be OK.
I will have to keep searching for the other or try to order it from the US. I just hate having to do that Money exchange thing though 😃

😞 Its so much harder to get stuff over here in Oz sometimes.

  • Hello all Basenji lovers ! Ordered the book last week at Amazon.com and received it yesterday. Read it also in a few hours and it is great.
PS. I ordered a puppy with one of the few breeders in Belgium and hope to welcome it in our family (with 4 Agapornis Love Birds flying freely around ;-))by the end of this year.
    Great forum!
    Greetings from Belgium, Europe

  • That is a great book! Welcome to the forum, you will learn a lot about basenjis here. Will this be your first basenji?

  • I love this book! I bought it a few months ago at Borders. The tri on the inside back cover is gorgeous!

  • I just received the "Basenji, a comprehensive guide to owning and caring for your dog" by Juliette Cunliffe. Looks great and filled with many tips & tricks for newbies like me. To MacPack : Yes, indeed it is my first dog ever. As I am retiring on the 1st of september, I'll have plenty of time spending with my (our) new friend. Actually I was in love with the "Cão da Serra de Estrella" , the beautifull Portuguese mountain dog, but we don't have enough space as it becomes to big and heavy. As we first saw pictures of the Basendji we immediately fell in love with it ! And after reading several books about them we can hardly wait to the end of this year to collect our puppy !

  • This was the book that I bought before I got Shango!

    It's an excellent read!

  • To TSJoe glad to hear you are getting a basenji. We have six birds and two basenji's. Most of the birds were here before the puppies came My birds are all rescue or were in need of a re home. The dogs are now 3 & 4 and have learned proper birdy behavior but remember basenji's are both sight and scent hounds. If they fly nature kicks in and they will try and catch them.
So doggies and birdies have seperate time outs and all are happy The dogs will visit them in their cages our cockatoo will give our girl kisses and pet her with his foot. but if my birds were flying my basenji's would try and catch them even after all this time Congratulations on your up and coming puppy
    They are soooo much fun.

  • I bought the Kenworthy book too and thought it was great.

Funny story about it … I was reading it in bed one night when EL D pops out from under the covers. He sees the picture on the cover and tenses up and starts sniffing and staring and cautiously coming closer -- I jerked the book towards him and he jumped back so fast -- what a hoot!

P.S. What neat looking birds TSJoe.

  • I have many basenji books including the Elspet Ford book, Mary Lou Kenworthy's book, and Sue Coe's book. They are all good books and each a little different. When I was first researching the breed Sue Coe's, The Basenji: Out of Africa to You was the one recommended to me and was very comprehensive. Mary Lou's book is also very good and geared to the pet owner. Elspet Ford's was a different perspective on the breed since it filled in a lot more of the British history than Sue Coe's book.

I'm going to have to get Susan Coe's book, especially because Ruby is of Akuaba lineage. Thanks for posting about that, because I didn't know she had written a book.

  • I love this book! I bought a copy when I was in the market for a basenji. I actually got to meet her at a lure coursing meeting (lure coursing is a great activity for basenjis). MaryLou gave me the contacts for the basenji i have now. If you dont have this book you should. Suprisingly I found it at Barnes&Nobles.
